Any job is not the same as a decent job. One that pays enough to live on and provides health insurance. At my work, OHSU, I know many people from scientists to nurses who have lost their jobs in the past year and they may be able to get a job flipping burgers for $8 an hour, but that is not sufficient when you have bills and a family to take care of. A shitty job is not enough for me. If I lost my job right now, I would have to live on my savings until I found a decent job that could support me. A shitty job is an absolute last case resort after you are unable to get a better one. And using every possible resources you have available to you is how you get a better one. That might mean applying to hundreds of jobs, talking with past business partners, looking for jobs from friends and family, and yes, even posting on the internet that you are available. One thing that nobody has pointed out is that DJ is old. He may have a ton of experience, but that does not mean that people want to hire him. Many companies look at older workers as fixed in their ways and demanding of more compensation, and that makes it very difficult for them to get decent jobs, especially in a down economy when a company looking to save a few pennies can hire a kid right out of school for less. Also, the student is ready to be molded by the company instead of bearing baggage. I know that you have been making your posts just to be a dick, but a lot of people around Oregon are having a real hard time. Before I got my job, I applied to several hundred jobs and got close a bunch, but in the end I was passed over. When I finally got my job I was very excited even though it pay's 20K less than I made 10 years ago.
On the contrary, a lot of experienced professionals are willing to take a pay cut, and wouldn't need as much training or guidance as recent graduates.
Dude, in this day and age, unemployed folks network (market themselves) via the internet all the time. Jaynes simply happens to have the benefit and platform of a well-visited blogsite from which to perform this activity. I say more power to him. In fact, I think it's almost pathetic that you think it's pathetic for him to do such.
I agree that many older people will take a pay cut, but that does not mean that they are not still perceived as deserving and possibly expecting more. From the employers standpoint, many expect that workers will not take pay cuts and still be happy, productive workers. So it's this perception I was talking about, not what the older worker will or won't do. Perception drives the hiring process.
Lighten up, Odenisgod, you'll probably understand the situation more after you hit your 14th birthday.
I assumed Jaynes was already at least a freelance PR writer for the Blazers front office based on his "Roy charges $49 autographs" smear job. After that propaganda, he lost me. Sorry about your situation, Dwight. Join the club.
He just linked to another column and wrote his own thoughts about it. That's what bloggers often do. Ed O.
Why did he leave the Portland Tribune again? I remember he had some kind of reason and there were threads on it......
ODENISGOD- what is your problem? The guy needs work, work that will help pay the bills, and work that will be fulfilling. What is wrong with him putting it out there in the universe? Nothing to laugh about. Good for him and good luck to him.
