I know I'm a bit late to the party on this one (been off for a bit), and it's a bit different than the "too many players" thread, imo. Will the Brain Trust really take this team to Training Camp (and if so, to the regular season?): Miller/Blake/Bayless Roy/Rudy Batum/Webster/Cunningham LMA/Outlaw/Pendergraph Oden/Przy That's 13 right there, assuming the rumors come true and we sign JP and DC. I'd really still like to see us make a play for Rubio using Outlaw, Bayless, Blake and/or Joel. Or get MEM's first for TO and sign Wilcox with the savings.
You can forget about Rubio, David Kahn seems to be invested in him for the long haul ... or at least until he gets to see him compete with Flynn head to head in a Wolves jersey. As for the roster being set, I read yesterday in a little blurb at the end of Jason Quick's article on Miller, that the team hopes to have about 2.8 million in cap room for the regular season when the capholds for Koponen, Freeland and Claver get lifted. I'm not sure I'd look at that as definitive proof that they have some other deal in the works, but it tells me they'd at least like to have the flexibility to add another player in some kind of lopsided trade (either absorbing a player's 2.8 million or less salary or throwing other players into the mix).
Gut feeling? Maybe another cheap minimum vet. added - and something done after the start of the year, before or at the trade deadline. The Outlaw/Blake expiring contracts are more attractive, I think, than the Raef contract was last year. The reasons - 1. These contracts are small and thus make sense in smaller deals - the Raef contract was so big it needed to be a very big deal that not many teams are willing to pull. 2. These contract come with active, productive players in positions of need for many teams (competent backup PG/serviceable starter and instant offense guy) 3. These contracts come with bird-rights for these serviceable players - so a team has the time to "audition" them before they decide to offer them an extension. 4. What Nik mentioned - we will have a bit more cap space once the season is underway - when the first round unsigned guys go off the cap.
I'm curious we aren't giving up the rights to the Euro's correct? Just officially not signing them this year and so there goes the cap-hold right?
Yeah, just holding the rights to them but not adding them to the roster. They have a caphold during the off-season but once the season starts, their capholds disappear til next off-season.
