    Notes on the event:


    -- The biggest and most anticipated fight in women's MMA history is Carano vs. Santos for the 145-lbs. Strikeforce Women's Championship. While Carano is considered to be the (pretty) face of women's MMA, Santos is it's powerful hands and will be the favourite going into this bout. Carano is undefeated in MMA with seven wins and Santos is 7-1, her first loss coming in her first fight (via leg lock). Both women are known for their Muay-Thai striking. The only obstacle these two face before this fight is making weight, something they have both struggled to do in the past. If either fighter fails to make weight this fight automatically becomes a three-round non-title bout. Otherwise it will be their first five minute x five rounds fight.

    -- Reigning, absent Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem was expected to defend his title against Fabricio Werdum at this event but a lingering hand injury forced him to withdraw. A replacement opponent for Werdum has not been announced. It is possible that one of the leftover heavyweights from Affliction's canceled show may step in (Pedro Rizzo or Gilbert Yvel). Other possible replacements include Brett Rogers and Jeff Monson. There are some rumblings that Strikeforce may partner with M-1 Global and bring Fedor Emelianenko onto the show, but negotiations with Emelianenko and his management team are notoriously difficult, and a last minute deal such as this one may be impossible to pull off.

    -- Josh Thompson, the reigning Strikeforce lightweight champion, and Gilbert Melendez, the interim champion, are set to rematch at this event in a title unification bout. Thompson controlled Melendez en route to a unanimous decision victory in their bout one year ago.

    -- Nick Diaz was supposed to rematch Joe Riggs for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight championship at this event but Riggs was forced to withdraw due to a severe reaction to medication he suffered. Diaz and Riggs first fought at UFC 57 in 2006 with Riggs claiming a unanimous decision victory. The two famously got into an altercation in the hospital following the bout. No replacement has been named but Phil Baroni, Paul Daley, and Jay Heiron lead the candidates to face Diaz.

    -- Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato Sobral was planning on fighting fast-rising Armenian Gegard Mousasi at Affliction: Trilogy, but the fight has been moved to Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg and made into a five-round affair. Mousasi doesn't have a contract with Strikeforce but winning their championship would likely lead to a long-term deal for him, which would be considered a major coup for Strikeforce.

    Jay Heiron will fight Diaz. Not the best match-up for Diaz, who doesn't fare well against most wrestlers.

    Josh Thompson has not been cleared to fight and will be replaced by Mitsuhiro Ishida, he only other man to beat Melendez.

    Strikeforce is preparing for that and has Erin Toughill tapped to replace either fighter in the event they are unable to make weight. I'm pretty sure because it is a title fight that they need to make 145, not 146, too. So the breathing space they had in the past is gone.

    Fabricio Werdum has agreed to face Mike Kyle at this event. As far as I know it's not for an interim championship.

    As everyone probably should've expected, SpikeTV will be airing the 100 Greatest Fights specials during the Carano vs. Cyborg broadcast.

    What are the odds SpikeTV draws between 5x the audience?

    Dana said that the last Strikeforce event on Showtime did a quarter-million viewers.

    ^ I just read that this is actually a five hour broadcast. I guess they're hoping to get people watching before the Strikeforce show starts and keep them stuck to the UFC.

    Nick Diaz was "busy training" and didn't show up for a pre-fight drug test, so his bout may not take place.
