Sam Raimi Enters World Of Warcraft

Here's one to file under, "Wait, whaaaa?". Sam Raimi has signed on to direct Warcraft, a film version of the long-running game series, including insanely popular massively-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game World of Warcraft.

The plan is for Raimi to oversee the development of this film while he works on Spider-Man 4, which is due to shoot next year, and then knock it off his To Do list straight after that.

For many World of Warcraft is synonymous with the kind of social dysfunction that leads grown men to spend hundreds of hours in the virtual world of Azeroth instead of eating, sleeping, going to work, looking after their kids or paying attention to basic bodily hygiene. However, with over 12 million subscribers, we've got to admit there must be something to it.

There's no word yet on what sort of quests or characters will be included, but with four games and countless novels, comics and other spin-offs to pilfer, the Warcraft universe certainly isn't short of lore or stories to explore on screen. Empire expects we'll be in store for an epic tale of conquest, heroism and endless whining about the amount of spam in Barrens chat.

The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is overseeing the project, with games creator Blizzard Entertainment, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Filming will begin as soon as Raimi finishes grinding exalted rep with the Wyrmrest Accord.

Can a regular joe invest a few bucks in a movie before they finish it? I would put half of my savings in that movie knowing how nuts people are for that baloney.

There will be like 20 nerds, all controlling different characters in a huge competition trying to be the best. First prize is a Gold Member subscription to WoWXXX with more nudity than ever. Slowly it turns into a soft-core porno and everyone leaves happy.

Screenplay Writer Robert Rodat to Pen Sam Raimi's Warcraft Movie

MTV Multiplayer let rip a few hours ago with news that the upcoming Warcraft feature film from Sam Raimi will have its story written by screenwriter Robert Rodat. Rodat is best known for penning "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Patriot."

"We want to be really faithful to the game...to the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents. I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.

"But we would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a 'World of WarCraft' adventure. Only obviously it's very different 'cause it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture."

There's more about the film over on MTV's movie blog, but this does at least sound promising.
