This guy is the biggest TOOL i have ever seen. How anyone in Oregon enjoys him is a mystery to me http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/or...f/2009/08/important_message_help_us_help.html
You know that any attention that columnist garners--good or bad--is a benefit to him? If you truly dislike him, don't read his stuff. Not caring is his Achilles' heel.
I'm down to reading about 4 columns per year and maybe I listen to The Bald Face Lie on 95.5 twice per year.
Yeah, what a shame that this idiot is trying to help out the schools. Did I miss something here, or is it because it's just Canzano that you guys hate him for anything he says?
I'm quite sure they didn't actually read the text or watch the video. Seeing "John Canzano" in the byline causes an instant avoidance for some people, followed by a critique of an article they never read in the first place. It's quite fascinating. I agree with him sometimes, he makes me angry other times, and he blows me away with a human interest story at times, but isn't that the point of being a columnist? If I wanted to read about only things that I agree with, I'd just read my own posts over and over and ignore everything else.
It's because he constantly writes things that have nothing to do with sports, but ties them together by saying "while you're worrying about Brandon Roy or the Blazers, keep this in mind..." This one was on the Blazers home page on Olive. Do we really need to be reminded that there are bad things in the world? Are we that blind? It's not like the news doesn't report on deaths, the bad economy, disasters, famine, the bad heat, or anything else that causes pain. This poster on Olive pretty much put it in perspective.
I guess I can understand if people are upset that it was on the O-Live Blazers page, although it's as simple as not clicking it if you're not interested. I don't know.. like it or not, Canzano's name recognition seemingly is growing in the area with the help of his radio show, and he's using his name out there for a good cause. The guy may know jack squat about the CBA or salary cap issues, but he does talk about important local issues time to time. I wouldn't be surprised if The O just made him a general columnist rather than just strictly a sports columnist someday.
Yes, but some of us suspect that he only does it to gain that recognition. The guy won the best sports writer award while writing stuff like this, so he's going to keep doing it. I spent seven years around sports journalists, radio, print, and television. They're some of the most egotistical and arrogant individuals you will ever meet. Canzano isn't stupid. He likes to write/say things that will provoke a reaction. He wanted this. He wants people to call and bitch him out. Some of us watch/read about sports because we would like a couple hours without hearing about Sam Adams... the economy.... Obama.... the war in Iraq.... cancer.... etc. It's an escape. Imagine if you put on your favorite music so you could kick back and not think about your work, your girlfriend/wife, your kids, the dog, dinner, the lawn needing to be mowed, etc. You are just about to lose yourself in the music when about 30 seconds into the first song, you hear Canzano's voice come on and say "schools need money." Your music returns and you settle back into your chair. You are trying to return to your happy place when 30 seconds later, Canzano returns and says "This girl died from cancer and you're listening to music?" Now you're obviously unsettled, but the music continues, so you try to forget about the intrusion. 30 seconds later you hear, "while you're thinking about your favorite band, this person is starving because they lost their job." At this point, you stop the music, and think aloud "why is this bald fucker messing with my "me" time?
I don't doubt the guy has an ego. And I don't doubt journalists have an ego about themselves. There's not a lot of jobs out there where you put your whole body of work out there for the public to view and criticize, and when you get recognized for it, you think you're probably more important than you really are. In this case, it was probably wrong that it was put on the O-Live Blazers page for the die-hards who care about getting strictly Blazer stuff. But to me, that doesn't bother me too much. It's not like it's rare for "celebs" (term used loosely in this case) to have foundations like this. They use their name recognition and connections for causes like this. Brandon Roy has the Brandon Roy foundation for the exact same thing. http://www.broy7.com/roy/foundation/ LaMarcus Aldridge has his own foundation http://www.lamarcusaldridge.com/aldridge/foundation/ Greg Oden has his Oregon Mentors deal. Canzano thinks at this point that his name is big enough to start something like this, and to me, more power to him if he knows he has enough people to support him out there. I just don't see a big deal out of it, and I think it's because of the name behind this deal, more than anything, is getting people up in arms for something that seems to me to be a good cause.
his life goal is to be a regular on around the horn. i am convinced of this. but it will never happen because theres only 1 major franchise in the whole state. all canzano cares about is himself don't let him fool you, he doesn't give a dam about any high schools
And that might be an issue if he was interrupting what you are doing. But, your analogy doesn't work. If I was listening to music, and was provided an option, before listening to my song, CD, or whatever, to listen to a blurb about schools, then i would have the choice to do that, or not to do that. Much like with Canzano. You don't have to read his writing, in the paper, or on the olive website. See his name and scroll away. And then, it didn't interrupt your escape from reality. I mean, there's ads on this website for some odd videogame with a very busty cartoon girl that i will never play. I have no interest in playing it. I am interested in sports, not fantasy video games. I am also not interested, while reading about the Blazers, in correcting back pain, or taking advantage of daily trading opportunities. Guess what? I don't read the ads any more. I saw they were something I didn't want, and I pass them by. I don't bitch on here every time an ad pops up because it interrupted my daily reading. An ad is on the screen every time I am here. I don't whine about it. I ignore it. Yet every time John Canzano writes a damn article, people bitch and botch and bitch, regardless of what he says. As was mentioned earlier, people complain seemingly without reading the article. If he says somehting they agreed with previously, there stance begins to differ, or they don't like the way he presented their argument. If you don't read his articles, and listen to his shows, he will not be allowed to write an article, an have a show, eventually. Canzano-1, people that whine and bitch and complain about him-0.
But seeing as how the Oregonian is the one and only print publication that covers the Blazers from Portland (I'm not counting the Columbian) we are left without much of a choice. How many sports columnists do we have? Dwight Jaynes was an ass, and I didn't always agree with his opinions, but he kept it sports related. I'm sorry, but I do not agree with the "if you don't like it, don't click it." The squeeky wheel gets the grease. If enough people bitch about JC, it will cause change.
Yeah, they're the only one who covers the Blazers. And the only one that covers the Timbers. I don't like soccer. Is it fair for me to bitch about TImbers stories showing up when I want to read about the Blazers? They interfere with my escape from reality. What I do is, I don't read them.
Are you really comparing professional soccer to writing about cancer patients or a lack of funding in schools? And you thought my analogy was bad?
It's all stuff I don't want to read. So yeah, I am comparing it. I don't mind Canzano's articles occasionally. So I briefly scan it. Is he talking about the Blazers? Then I'll read it. Talking about someone's friend of a friend he met once? I pass. Pretty simple, and it doesn't disrupt my uality of life as it seems to do to many in here who hate him so much.
But there is an entire newspaper in which Canzano could write about cancer patients, school funding, or people without jobs. He could write in the Living or the Metro, and nobody would complain because those articles would be right where they should be. Why even have sections of the newspaper if you're going to write about what you want, where you want, regardless of what section you write for? You are comparing something that belongs in the SPORTS SECTION to something that has nothing to do with sports.
