The title says it all.My "True Point Guard" is the without a doubt leader of the team. Has to have the ability to get his teamates involved and make them better. He knows how to run the offense well. He knows when to pass or when to shoot.

In my opinion, a true PG is someone who is a leader of their team. Someone who plays well and can dominate if needed. He needs to have great vision on the court and always know where his teammates are. He also needs to include his teammates in the game and be unselfish when it comes to TEAM basketball.

A player who is unselfish and runs the offense as an extension of the coach. A leader on both ends of the court and someone who makes his teammattes better..

A general that makes his team better, and is unselfish. Basically, not Stephon Marbury, but Nash, Kidd, or Billups.

I agree with all of those, and he also needs to be able to score when called on.

Thinks team first before himself, controls the offense with ease and is able to get the ball to his teammates. Kirk Hinrich!!!

A pass-first point guard is a pure point guard. Someone that feels comforbable driving and kicking to open teammates.

Re: How do you define "true PG"?

I think that its important that the rest of the team respects the point guard because whether the PG is the best player on the team or not, he needs to be the floor general and the leader. Somebody that loves to get his teamates involved in the game and doesnt care about his individul stats but more about his team winning games. I think that J Kidd is the best person that fits all of those categories

Unslefish, runs the offense well, get's the team hyped, and just a great leader. So, that narrows it down to hmmmm Jason Kidd?

How does defense define a true point guard? That is an added bonus to that but not a part of the definition. True point guard is comfortable with running his team. Possibly leadership is another part of a true point guard.

But, yes that helps a point guard but, it isn't a key factor and that is why it was probably overlooked.

Re: How do you define "true PG"?

I'm talking about MY definition. I don't want a pg that'll get burned all the time and play poor defense. Yes, i know that this is a bit contradictory bc of my arguments for Steve Nash, but he is the exception.

i think most true point gaurds are great on defense as well. examples, Jason Kidd, John Stockton, Chauncey Billups. They usually set the tone for thier defenses. Always putting great pressure on the opposing backcourt.

Re: How do you define "true PG"?

Good topic Ballaholic. These days, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, and perhaps Chris Paul are your abnormal point guards. Most PGs in the league are more concerned with getting 15 points than contributing to 15 of their teams points. My true point guard is simply a guy that looks to pass first. When he and his teammate are on a breakaway, he dumps it off to him for the dunk. When he drives into the lane, instead of shooting the contested shot, he kicks it out.
