details portlands bid for the 1968 Olympics, I wonder what would have changed and how much Portland would be different.

"The proposed site covered Delta Park and the Oregon Centennial Exposition grounds."

"The Olympic Stadia was an outgrowth of the Portland Metropolitan Future Unlimited stadium proposal. It was to have seating for 60,000 with 20,000 more temporary seats and standing from for 10,000 for a total capacity of 90,000."

It's not that Portland doesn't have enough hotel rooms to hold the all-star game it's that Portland doesn't have a single hotel big enough to hold everyone. Now our wonderful mayor wants the tax payers to pay for such a hotel.

If Portland would have been awarded the Olympics there would have been enough hotels built to hold everyone.

Reading that article, I was impressed by the vision of the people quoted. They wanted to create a Portland that stood above Seattle and Vancouver, BC. They wanted our city to be the business center of the Pacific Northwest.

Today, we talk about velodromes, skateparks and bike paths. What a shame.

It's funny because people mock OIG for saying it, but a lot of what he says is true about Portland/Portlanders, and seemingly not wanting the city to grow.
I continue to have this thought/vision of Portland standing on top in the PNW. Just need a few people to push us in the right direction and get it started. Very unlikely, but still possible.
We have a much better geographical makeup, IMO, to have a bigger and better city than Seattle does.

Sly, maybe you can vote for me if or when I decide to run?

    Alright, up to 4 votes!

I'd push for football first, but baseball would definitely come next on the agenda.

I doubt we ever got close to having a shot at the Olympics, but that stadium would have landed us an NFL or MLB franchise for sure. Pretty sure we would have built a newer stadium by now too:)....:(

I guess I'm one of those. I don't want the city to get any bigger. Better, yes, but it doesn't need to be bigger.
There are plenty of bigger cities available if one wants a bigger city.

    Olympics '62

Portland made a bid for the 1962 Olympics that could have eventually landed the city an NFL franchise:

This proposed Delta Park stadium would have seated 90,000 people!

Damn. I should have read the current threads before I posted.

In a way, I'm glad that beast of a structure didn't get built. 60's architecture SUCKED!

Actually it would have looked much different and much better after they domed it. But unlike Seattle where they blew up the Kingdome after they replaced it Portland would have converted the Deltadome into a giant homeless shelter.
