http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/cheaney_special_assistant_081809.html Biggest move of Larry Riley's career. Who cares about Stoudamire? This is huge! Riley is going to come on shortly and explain how this is a franchise-changing move.
I like this move for the simple fact that in the past when people have asked J-Rich and Monta which player mentored them and taught them how to be a professional ball player they both said Calbert Cheaney (is it just a coincidence that they both developed money mid-range J's?). He was a bust but he also seems like a good teacher and a guy who is pretty knowledgeable.
Cheaney is actually the type of player that becomes a decent coach. Guys that were cogs on well coached teams. Guys like Rudy T, Nate McMillan, Mo Cheeks, Doc Rivers, Avery Johnson, etc. Not a bad player to add to the mix.
Cheaney was a Hoosier and could play some D, so hope it rubs off on the other Warriors. I wonder if Keith Smart wanted him, so he would be ready to step in as his assistant coach when Nelson retires.
