That's gotta hurt. Minny and his agent had it all worked out, and Rubio backs out.

Must've been his wife who wanted to stay overseas.

Wait..wouldn't the US be "overseas" from their perspective?

I just really wonder if Minny will trade him.

Probably depends on how Flynn develops and how the Minny youth grow as a team. As it is, Minny has the leverage at this point on Rubio's NBA future. Will Rubio continue to progress into a superstar? That's the real question, and he won't accelerate his growth in Spain as he would have in the US. He will still be a gamble for a team wanting to trade for him.

Yeah, but what if he doesn't improve? What if he struggles? I'm sure his stock isn't high right now because of the 2 years with Barcelona, but it's still a risk to hold onto him.

Good point, but he can't be bought out for two years as it is. Seems like Minny is stuck with him, unless Isiah Thomas suddenly gets control of another NBA team. Why trade assets for the rights to an unknown who appears to be a bit of a flake?

Well, Portland could very easily trade for him and not even feel the loss. Let's say we want to have someone stashed who could come over and take the reigns from Andre Miller in a couple seasons. Rubio would be perfect. I've been saying that we need a consolidation trade, and this could be the perfect fit.

I've got to think that Kahn always intended Rubio as a trading chip, or he wouldn't have drafted Flynn. Flynn has a built-in US fan base and is from Buffalo, so Minny doesn't seem cold and depressing to him. Kahn just knew that he couldn't let a top 2 talent slip past him.

The only way Minny doesn't trade Rubio is if Flynn turns out to be a bust. (But even then, Rubio will probably refuse to play for the Wolves.) If NY hadn't lost their 2010 draft pick to Utah already, Rubio's rights would probably already belong to the Knicks. I can't see Rubio ending up on a small-market team, though. Even if one is interested, I'm sure his agent will let it be known that he'll just stay with Barca rather than come over to the Memphises of this world. (Or probably Portlands.) I hate to say it, but I see him being the post-Kobe star of the Lakers.

One thing is for sure, he'll never play for Portland.

I doubt it. He just doesn't want to play in Minny. I don't blame him.

I still have no clue why Rubio stayed in the draft. Instead of entering in a few years, his NBA future is dictated by Minnesota as long as he's playing ball in Europe.

Re: OT: Rubio backed out of deal

A lot of NBA players don't even live where their home team plays. Plus your going to tell me that travelling around all the NBA towns and getting all the free pussy that comes with it wouldn't have been a blast? You also have to remember that being on a bad team also means lots of playing time. All positives IMO. :ghoti:

This was about the buyout though. The 5th pick doesn't make enough money to handle that kind of buyout. When a guy gets drafted, it's supposed to be a payday, not put him in debt.
