Ben from BE has more updates

Update: LaVanguardia.Es -- another Spanish website -- also has a report. They refer to the injury as a "minor hamstring injury" and confirm that the recovery time will not be known for at least 48 hours.

Update: ElMundo.Es -- another Spanish website -- reports that Rudy is doubtful for the start of EuroBasket. The report also states the injury occurred while Rudy was shooting a 3 pointer.

Probably a blessing in disguise. Rudy has been playing competitive basketball virtually non-stop for the last few years, from his club team, to the national team, to the Blazers, etc.

Assuming he's only out a few weeks, he gets some rest and comes back to Portland rested and ready.

Yep. It's actually the perfect time for him to get this injury, if you can allow that there are perfect times for injuries. He gets a few weeks to heal himself, makes the transistion back to the US, and is ready to go in late September.

Honestly, if I were an NBA team I would put it in their contract that they are not allowed to compete during the summer without expressed permission. We've seen so many players go down with serious injuries because of the Olympics and world championships. Guys need the offseason to rest and recoop. What good are you to your team if you are injured for part or most of a season? If I was an NBA owner and I was paying someone millions of dollars to play for me, I would expect them to do everything in their power to be healthy.

I'm sure I'll get flack for saying that these guys should choose their teams over their countries, but this is their livelihood. Millions of dollars are invested in them, and unlike the NFL, they have guaranteed contracts. They can do virtually whatever they like, and the teams that pay their salaries end up footing the bill.

For me, the real problem is that the European countries seem to have their players in one tournament or another every summer. I can see every other year for a world championship or an Olympic Games, but it seems that every summer I am reading about Euros playing numerous live games. That is simply too much wear and tear, but without the NBA applying some pressure, I'm sure things will remain as is.

True, but even the US Olympic team is practicing every summer. As much as I want our guys to win and be the best in the world, I don't think it should come at the expense of their careers.

For what, three or four days? I agree that even that may be too much, but most players in the league (outside of Andre Miller, I suppose, but he gets a pass) play ball fairly consistently one way or another throughout the offseason. I'd rather have them scrimmage in a controlled setting than at, say, UCLA, where some hot shot HS player could bite off more than he can chew and ends up hurting a star player.

That's true. I just think the NBA either needs to do something about the Euro leagues stealing our guys for the summer, or have non-guaranteed contracts like the NFL. If they want to go play for their country that's fine, but if they get hurt there's a good chance they'll lose out on their money.

The globalization of basketball is a good thing overall for the league and overall talent level and revenue, HOWEVER the seasons are just too damn long. This is why I'm in favor of trimming 10-15 games off of the NBA schedule and eliminating a couple of teams from the playoffs in order to raise the stakes of each game, and you could do it w/o cutting out any TV revenue really because so many aren't televised as of now.

I agree with the part about shortening the season, but the league makes its TV money in the playoffs. There is no way they would cut teams; I'm surprised they haven't tried to add teams lately.

Well the european leagues don't play nearly as many games, like shameless pointed out. So I think i'ts sort of like going to school year round, you have a break every month, instead of one big one. Which I think is a good idea. The season should play year round with a one week break every month! :devilwink:
