The UFC Welterweight Title eliminator between Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 has been cancelled due to a training injury (concussion) to Swick. British born fighter Paul Daley will replace Swick and the bout will likely become a run-of-the-mill welterweight match up. Daley was scheduled to face UFC newcomer Brian Foster in the preliminaries on this card. http://mmamania.com/2009/09/04/paul...mann-for-ufc-103-booked-with-mike-swick-hurt/ Looks like GSP won't be in any hurry to return from his groin injury/elbow surgery. GSP was expected to defend his title in January or February but with no number one contender it seems he will be afforded additional time off.
Daley looked really good against Jake Shields for a lot of their EliteXC title fight. His take down defense was good and he threw good punches (albeit against Shield's lacking striking skills). On his back he was able to stay safe while mounted, at least for a while. Similarly, the obvious modus operandi for Kampann would be to get Daley down to the mat and grapple with him. Daley is a good striker but has very unrefined ground skills, whereas Kampmann has some cleverness to his grappling game and choked out another bomb-thrower in Drew McFedries (in the upper weight class to boot). Stylistically it could make for a better fight than Swick/Kampmann, which was destined to be a ground and pound display by Swick.
I suppose an exciting win for Kampmann could lead to a title shot for him regardless of Swick's non-participation. Patrick Cote and Thales Leites both got title shots...
