Jeremy Maclin Could Start Against Chiefs

Jeremy Maclin played his first NFL game in the season opener and caught his first NFL pass last week against New Orleans.

Now it looks like the Eagles' first-round pick could be making his first NFL start Sunday against Kansas City.

Head coach Andy Reid said Maclin would get the start against the Chiefs if wide receiver Kevin Curtis can't play. Reid also said former starter Reggie Brown would be active for the first time this season if Curtis is sidelined, but would serve as a backup.

Curtis has been nursing a sore knee since training camp and played through sporadic pain but was withheld from practice Friday.

Curtis is listed as doubtful, but Maclin didn't sound overly enthused about the potential of cracking the starting lineup.

"I'm just excited to play," he said. "That's how it is when you're backing up somebody and they can't go, then you start. So it's nothing out of the ordinary."

Curtis, who turned 31 in July, was coming off his second sports-hernia surgery in less than a year when the Eagles traded up to grab Maclin 19th overall. Curtis slowly worked back into shape during the minicamp and training camp.

At some point in training camp, Curtis started wearing a brace around his knee, prompting speculation that he wasn't fully recovered. Reid said the team hasn't administered an MRI because Curtis' knee isn't swollen. The team doesn't believe there are any structural problems.

"I've limited his reps just a little bit the last couple of days," Reid said. "And then [Friday], I just felt like let's back off and take him off that thing and see how it feels [today]."

Reid said it's possible that Curtis' knee soreness stems from compensation in his recovery from sports-hernia surgery.

"He could have changed his gait or whatever, that might be something," Reid said. "He just has soreness in there and he'll work through it."
