http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/ This disgusts me. My family and I will no longer wear nike brand clothes or shoes. In fact I just bought some Nike baseball cleats for both my kids a month ago. I will be heading to Academy to buy some Addidas tonight. I wonder if Nike will give me the money back for the shoes I bought? I will let everyone know how that turns out. I get that he did his time, but I think it's in poor taste, on Mike's part, that they gave him a wad of money so soon.
Just so you know, the clear acrylic shelves holding those cleats (along with nearly every other piece of acrylic in the store) was manufactured right here in Oregon...
That's awesome. It doesn't change my stance though, and the shoes weren't on clear acrylic shelves where I bought them. Update: I talked to Nike today and after several transfers, I got someone that helped me. They said they understood my concerns, and would reimburse me for the shoes. They asked to please send them back to them once I had different shoes so they could donate them to youth organizations.....(good for them) I asked, and I was told I was not the only person that had this request.
By the way, I meant the Academy store, not necessarily where you bought the Nikes. Every sign at the end of every row has a sign on it, with a plastic cover, made in Oregon. Every sign in front of every piece of exercise equipment has a plastic cover, made in Oregon. Every shoe that's on a clear shelf (including the golf shoe shelves with the green carpet), every sign over every clothing rack, every slatwall signholder, every countertop sign holder, etc, and even every big white case with electronics sitting on blue stands in it by the front door, made in Oregon.
Everything about Nike disgusts me, from that smarmy sleazeball Phil Night to the fact he outsources their labor overseas to child-slave labor camps which are rightfully outlawed in all civilized nations. They make crappy shoes anyway. The Adidas I won 2 seasons ago in the prediction game are still comfy.
Fuck Nike. Everything this guy says about how sorry he is, blah blah blah, is a ploy. Mike Vick is and always will be a scumbag. Back to Addidas and Converse-Chucks for me.
I'm trying to remember when advertising athletic apparel became only for the squeaky-clean at heart. Nike being propped up for years by a womanizing, egotistical gambler (who happened to be the greatest basketball player of all time) is ok, but them signing a convicted dog-killing gambler (who made the mistake of pissing off PETA) makes you return the shoes? I understand the whole "it's on the forefront of my mind" thing, and obviously it's your choice, but I think I'd rather support a company who's employing a dog killer than a rapist. But that's just me.
That's an excellent observation. By "rapist," are you referring to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, or someone else? The idea of supporting only companies whose morals and ethics agree with yours is fine, and it's everybody's right, but it's also a slippery road to go down. Every major movie studio in Hollywood is filled with lying, cheating, womanizing executives who will make any movie in the world for a buck, but that doesn't seem to keep people from going to theatres to see their product.
Nikes suck and have for at least 10 years. I could forget that they were made by 11 year olds who worked 12 hour days when they were good shoes. I haven't bought any in years, and I certainly won't unless my dog pisses me off, then I will just to add insult to injury when I kick him. (please know that I would never kick my dog as my foot is bigger than he is)
Fair enough. In my mind I'd just equated OJ and K*be--both were "not guilty" but both paid in civil court, so I don't really consider them innocent. But I see what you're saying. What's the cutoff, then, for behavior of an endorser that would cause you to dump a product you liked? Convicted of a felony? Any jail time? Doing something you wouldn't want your son doing, and getting caught? Suspended by the league? Drug use?
I'm not sure I have a universal cutoff? I think, for me, I grade it on a case by case basis. Also, like a lot of things, time heals most wounds. I have no idea what OJ wore, for example. Here is another example involving Nike and K*be, from wikipedia. Again, some people should get a second chance if they do their time. I think it's the fact that they signed him so quickly after he rejoined the league that disgusts me.
Get off your high horse.... Who cares, no one is forcing you to buy Vick merchandise....So now your going to boycott Nike because they are giving him a 2nd chance? What is this The Scarlet Letter Redux? Yeah, let's brand him for life, no 2nd chances, no more marketing opportunities...ever!!!!! I swear the hypocrisy of people these days knows no bounds.... and FYI...I could give a rats a$$ about Michael Vick...I don't really care...but what I do care about is the rampant hypocritical judgement that infects every part of our way of life....god forbid someone puts your life under a microscope and excoriates every single screw up you ever made...The guy went to frickin jail, which he deserved, he has served his debt to society...
