That was the only game I got to see in the Coliseum. I won tickets in the lottery system they had (a pair) and I drove all the way to Portland from Bend because I was going to college at Central Oregon Community College at the time. I have never been so fucking stoked after a basketball game than that one. Adrenaline from that win lasted for hours.
WOW. WOW. Did I say WOW????? I take back every bad thing I've ever said about the MC. That's a beautiful old stadium.
I doubt it, they always had the curtains closed for games. I think I have seen footage of one of the first games played there with them open though.
It looks a lot better in the sunlight than when you're actually sitting in it these days, but there's no question it was a well-designed building with great sightlines.
Spurs playoff series. Mmm mmm...what a series. We're talking about the one where Strickland blew it for them in the later game... I'll never forget how loud that place was, everybody on their feet, stomping, clapping through almost the entire game. I think back then season ticket holders were required to either be under 65 or have a heart rate above 65.
Great pictures, the memories come flooding back... Ah, the good ol' days. To be a kid again. Sure looks tiny compared to the Rose Garden.
My dad had season tickets since 76, so a lot of memories there. I too stood against the wall for the standing room only, along with sitting on the benches at the top. The games though, were what I remember most. 1. Game 6 against Spurs - 1990 2. Bates at the horn 3. Whenever Boston or LAL came to town 4. The near perfect quarter against the Spurs 5. Game 2 against the Suns - 1990 Can't wait to hear the Schonz tonight during the 3rd quarter.
Frye will ruin it by going off for 48 on us.....Unless he ate 78 Buffalo Wings at Fire on the Mountain again.
My #1 memory will always be from the Blazers' first season. The defending champion Knicks were in town, and the baby Blazers (led by Barnett and Petrie) blew them off the floor. Sadly, the glass palace wasn't even sold out that night....but the fans that were there were *real* fans - and they blew the roof off.
The thing a lot of people who have never seen a game there is how LOUD that place got! There is no "acoustic cloud" on the ceiling like the RG! It's just steel and metal! I hope this game tonight is up and down fast break action so it will be rockin'!
I thought the acoustic cloud was reversed during blazer games to bounce the sound not absorb it. At least that's how it was explained to me when the RG was built. However, the MC will always be louder. I wonder if it will be as loud without the curtain.
