The CDC recommends it for my kids. But the CDC is a government run health care agency, which is the beginning of a slippery slope into socialized medicine. If they recommend this, soon they'll be recommending death panels. So I won't. I figure my kids will be happy that my principled stand allows them to grow up without being under the yoke of a tyrannical socialist government. Provided, of course, they survive.
My pregnant wife and I have been waiting it seems like forever for these shots to arrive. I've tried to have her avoid large crowds, confined spaces, pretty much anywhere near barfo's bedroom. From what I hear it's not that much worse than the regular flu, depending upon what age and category you are in, but with pregnant woman the fatality rate is abnormally high. As far as I'm concerned they can't get these shots out fast enough.
In the same situation with a pregnant wife. Not going near the shot. One thing that bugs me is immunity of vaccine makers from lawsuits. Not that suing them if something happened to my wife makes it any better, but releasing something with no liability bugs me a bit. I also don't know what's in thsoe shots, and what the long term effects could be both on my wife and my unborn child.(congratulations, by the way, Yakbladder, on your upcoming child). I am already weary of some vaccines and thei reffects, let alone one rushed out to combat a new flu strain. No thanks. We are being overly dilligent in hand washing, vitamin taking, water drinking, etc. Avoiding sick people and what not. Obviously, come basketball season, it opens our chances up more to illness, but that's where we will have to be more carefuil, probably miss mroe games, and also, immediately go to the doctor once she starts to feel ill at all. A big issue for prgnant women having a high fatality rate is going untreated, which is the biggest issue of the fatality rate in general. Getting to the doctor immediately would go a long way in preventing those deaths, but a lot of times, you feel a sore throat, and you try to fight it off. Wrong move in this situation, especially for pregnant women.
In addition to this, most of the deaths have a different underlying cause and the flu simply adds to it. I'll take my chances. The last time I got a flu shot I was sick as a dog for days.
So its not safe to take it? Got the regular flu shot about 2 weeks ago, my dad keeps saying maybe that's enough to prevent the swine flu but who knows. (he works in the surgery as a tech there, and he says even the docs are split half are for it the other half say no way) lol
I dunno. Most likely, it is. Obviously, there's no chance of any test for long term effects of it, however. I just don't feel comfortable getting it for my unborn child, personally. I can understand why some would get it. I'm glad I don' thave a very young baby right now, as I would be mroe torn on what to do. I've personally never gotten a flu shot, however, and am not going to start now by getting one rushed out.
Well first of all congrats to you as well on the upcoming "life changer" as people love to constantly remind me Those shots are made using the same process as the regular flu shot. The regular flu shot at least in the last ten years has proved remarkably safe so I guess I'm not as concerned. Remember that millions of older Americans get that every year. At first I admit to having some hesitation over rushing to get a "brand new vaccine" but then read through the facts. She won't be able to get it until next week anyways so we'll have a week to see what happens to everyone else (on top of those who have already received the nasal spray). I do agree, however on part of your view towards vaccines in general. They already throw so much at a kid that we're doing plenty of research first just to see what we need. Treated or not, the ratio of pregnant women who die from swine flu as compared to the general population is much higher. The #'s are low, relative to the number of people in the U.S. but the ratio is high. CK: The regular flu shot will NOT prevent the swine flu unless they were the exact same strain. It's like license plates. If you don't have the exact match of license plate you won't be able to find the car.
