That's a misleading opening sentence. NBA players have been allowed to do that for some time. The confusion stems from what I'll call the gather step -- the step players take as they are picking up the ball. Formally, you were allowed that step plus another full step before you have to pass it or shoot it. In practice, its morphed into allowing two full steps plus that initial gather step in some contexts (e.g., on drives), while generally allowing only one extra step in other contexts (e.g., post ups, step backs). But it looks like they are insisting how calls are made will not change. Its just an adjustment in the wording.
Yeah to my knowledge, the refs were always told to call it in this fashion. Now the wording is just official.
yeah this is a confusing article, but nothing has changed, all thats changed is nba put the word out on it so people like jalen rose dont get all excited on tv about how he travelled and all that, its pretty much putting the end to those silly discussions about travelling
