Re: World Victory Road Presents: Sengoku XI (Nov. 7th) Notes on the event: -- Japanese judo sensation Satoshi Ishii was expected to debut at this event but instead will fight at Sengoku's year-end event, Sengoku Raiden Championship. -- Burgeoning MMA star "King" Mo Lawal is featured prominently on the poster for this event but as of yet has no opponent and may not participate. Likewise, Japanese superstar Akihiro Gono also has no opponent. Don't put it past Japanese MMA promoters to use the likeness of a fighter to promote an event and then fail to deliver said fighter as it is common. -- Heavyweight standout Dave Herman, upset by heavyweight journeyman Choi Mu Bae at Sengoku no-Ran 2009, looks to get back on track in Japan with a win over thundering Kiwi Jim York. York was choked out by Antonio Silva at the last Sengoku event in September while Herman knocked out Don Frye at Shark Fights a few weeks prior. -- Silva was expected to face Josh Barnett at this event but opted to face Fabricio Werdum at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers instead. Barnett hasn't fought since January and has been suspended stateside since August after failing a pre-fight drug test. -- Former UFC champion Kevin Randleman, who has lost eight of his last eleven fights, faces unbeaten Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov at Sengoku XI. -- Sengoku Middleweight Grand-Prix Champion Jorge Santiago, who has won all nine of his fights since being cast out of the UFC in 2006, faces Mamed "The Cannibal" Khalidov--just not for any kind of title. Why isn't it a title fight? Who the fuck knows.

Lost amongst the Fedor hoopla was Sengoku XI which took place early this morning. Two surprises for the show: one big and one kind of big. The big one was Mamed Khalidov upsetting Jorge Santiago with punches in the first round. It was a non-title fight (yep, we're in Japan) so Santiago retains his WVR Middleweight Championship. The loss snapped Santiago's nine-fight winning streak and once again reminded fight fans that his chin isn't made of granite. It's the fifth time in Santiago's career he's been knocked out. The man who beat him was 20-3-1 Polish fighter Mamed Khalidov, a 30-year old who's most recognizable opponent up until today was Jason Guida. The other surprise was a split decision going against Hatsu Hioki, who had also been unbeaten in nine fights. Hikoi lost the controversial decision against journeyman Michihiro Omigawa (8-8-1), fighting in his sixth fight in 2009. Omigawa admitted after the fight that he didn't think he won.
Gono looked solid, kind of looked like Gono was toying with his opponent. The KO of the fat New Zealander was kind of funny, goes for an achilles lock and then gets bashed in the face a few times with the heel, goes completely out. Randleman doesn't have much left at this point, just his name. As much as Shivalo and Mezger want to claim that Randleman won, he didn't and it was a pretty uneventful fight.
