Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft BEIJING (Reuters) -- China's Yi Jianlian, linked with a move to the NBA, says he plans to stay with the national team rather than follow Yao Ming's path this year. The 2.1 meter forward for the Guangdong Tigers in China's premier basketball league believes he is not ready for the NBA and wants to concentrate on China, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday. "I see myself as a national team member," the Beijing News quoted Yi as saying. "After all, I haven't yet reached NBA standard." "As a young player, I must move forward gradually."Chen Haitao, a spokesman for the Guangdong Tigers, said that Yi's time would come. "It's a matter of time for (Yi) to enter the draft, but now is possibly not the right time. (Guangdong) won't block him participating in the draft."While Yi's club might not seek to quell his NBA aspirations, China's basketball officials have voiced concerns about the prospect of China's talent missing national team games while warming benches in NBA teams."We have always supported those who leave the country to play overseas," Li Yuanwei, director of the China Basketball Association, was quoted as saying in the Beijing News."But they are important talents in our national basketball team. We must guarantee their playing time... We want to protect our players from sitting on the bench after they get to the NBA," Li said.In contrast to Yao Ming's glittering career, the NBA experiences of Menk Bateer and Wang Zhizhi, the other two towers in China's NBA "Great Wall", were characterized by regular transfers and little game-time.Wang's NBA aspirations clashed with China duties, leading to his sacking after failing to join the national team during the Asian Games in 2002.Wang returned to China earlier this month after four years of official ostracism. While Wang is expected to bolster the national team in the future, China basketball was rocked last week when Yao Ming broke his foot in a Houston Rockets NBA game, casting doubt over his fitness for Tokyo's World Championships in September. But Yi's patriotism will warm the hearts of China's basketball officials."This summer, there are big matches like the World Championships and the Asian Games which are very important to me and I don't want to miss these opportunities," Yi said.</div>http://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp...6&Cat=6&Num=006Smart move.
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. yea i'm glad he knows he isn't good enough and there's people telling them to not go. he wouldn't exactly be a dissapointment if he came into the nba because no one was expecting him to do anything and then he'd get bashed. etc. etc.like you said, smart move and hope he gets better so he can eventually grace the nba. and show that china actually has some basketball talent. more than just yao ming. but of course they have a long way to go. that's what the nba is for right? connecting the world together w/ great basketball? lol
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. Yea, I rmeember that guy - didnt he find out he had some brain tumor or something? At least tahts wat I was told - they even had this donation thing for him on this one website. i dunno, maybe that was just a prank or something.
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. i have no clue either. he's probably developing still. but i doubt any more superstars like yao ming will come along from china in a long time. but it's been great for the people because yao has been such an inspiration.
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. 'Next Yao Ming'....please...they are completly different players....'Next star from China' is more like it.

Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. Agreed, he's too big and an injury waiting to happen. When you get over 7'6'" (Yao being the exception) it hurts your game more than anything being that tall.
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. I've seen some footage of him, the guy runs up the court and looks like he's going to pass out, I don't blame him either..I'd get tired too if my legs were 6 feet long
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. forget sun ming ming, i wanna see this guy, Yi Jianlian.. man i wish he didn't drop out. he's supposed to be a true athlete, sick dunks, etc. wow. i've been reading up on him and he seems like the real deal.. it even says that they're projecting him to be early first round. maybe it's me but i can't imagine a very athletic chinese center. i'm stuck on yao ming. but this guy is the new thing. athletic. quick. aggressive. yao ming has even said that "little yi" is better than him.whoooo i can't wait, future star of the NBA? who knows.
Re: China's next Yao Ming says no to NBA draft. He's hardly new though, he's been a big prospect in China for three years now.
