Meanwhile, us America-hating terrorist-coddlers love him all the more, so it all balances out!

True, but how does that lame-ass song honor all those native Americans and civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Maybe it would help if it wasn't such a God-awful dirge. I nominate "We Will Rock You" as a new anthem. Or maybe "Nothin' but a G-thang" in homage to "the people" of the President.

Or, if it has to mention America, the obvious candidate is staring us in the face:

A gambler implicates 13 NBA refs in game fixing...and the thread draws less than a dozen posts.

Roy's behavior during the National Anthem draws over 260.

What interesting priorities.

This drives me crazy. There is no reason that the national anthem needs to be performed so slowly. Listen to a military band perform the anthem--generally takes less than 70 seconds. The self-indulgent vocalists who stretch it out for 2 1/2 minutes do themselves, listeners, and the country a disservice by using one of our nation's most recognizable symbols into a vehicle for self-promotion.

If the main point of the National Anthem is to honor the armed forces, then they should get to nominate which song they would like to be honored by. From what I can gather, "Bodies" by Drowning Pool would probably be odds-on favorite.

I've long felt that if the purpose of the Anthem is to represent the country, "America, the Beautiful" would be a much better choice than the "Star Spangled Banner". Our current anthem focuses on warfare and the flag's perseverence throughout. The other details the country's topographical diversity, and then in the subsequent verses expounds on the foundational principles of our nation--freedom and liberty, as well as those who sacrificed to secure them. I think that would be much more appropriate as an anthem to honor America.

The fact remains that both of them are really, really crappy songs. This reminds me of Tom Lehrer's complaint that the trouble with most "traditional" songs is that they're written by average people.

Why not "Born in the USA"? Or "This Land is Your Land"? They're marginally less crappy, but equally suited to flag-waving, if that's your thang.

(This is not a phenomenon unique to the USA. The British National Anthem is even worse. (Except for the Sex Pistols' version of it.) But we have a song called "Jerusalem" that actually has lyrics written by a real poet, and God alone knows what they mean, so it's much better, and tends to produce the same patriotic emotions. Of course, the REAL English National Anthem is .

So John Canzano busts out his Mad Libs controversial article and inserts Patriotism in all the blanks to get the Sheeple of America all fired up.

Fantastic!

I read the Bald Faced Idiot because I like to guess which hot button topic the article will be about.

Could it be "Greedy Athletes"?
Maybe "Religion in Sports"?
Or how about "Pampered Athletes" and it's sub category "Athletes are treated differently"?
Could it be "Sick Fan"?

This one was obviously "Patriots" + "Athletes are role models".

The stupidest thing about this particular article is JC has written about it before but in a positive light.

Bald Faced Fool is probably the only guy in Portland who misses the Jail Blazers with all his shriveled up heart.

At least then he could pretend to be outraged about something that was somewhat outrageous. Now he has to manufacture that outrage.

The really sad part is anyone anywhere falls for it.

thank you for this. this was the best part of this thread by far.......

I think we should not assume that roy feels one way or the other when we did not get his side of the story.

LOL i dont check the forums for 24 hours and this is what i come to find.

I just can't understand why certain people get so up in arms over someone's freedom(s). The irony in here boggles my mind.

Anyway, HCP I expect some greatness in the Net's game, so make sure your cuts and replays include something in it for us.

That's a matter of opinion. I disagree. I personally think that the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" are...well...beautiful, and that the melody is simple yet simultaneously majestic. I don't find it to be a "crappy" song at all.

Re: Roy Absent during National Anthem

So, Brandon Roy likes to sit in solitude during the National Anthem, and pray or be alone.

How is that much different than the odd practice of standing in a line on a basketball court? Why is one patriotic and the other isn't? Why is one correct, and the other is wrong?

He isn't being disrespectful, but the concrete interpretation that some people make about what makes you an American or how you must do what I do if you are to be a true American, is.

He sits in the tunnel area, and prays or has a moment alone. Why is that any worse than the times when I've talked to my dad about something during the NA? Not like we've carried on conversations, but I'll lean over to him and say "man, this singer/group is great/sucks/butchering the song!" And my dad, a veteran, will say something back.

Our people don't do that!

It is so presumptuous for anyone to declare their brand of American traditions or values as the mold for which we judge anyone else.

I support Brandons right to honor the National Anthem how he see's fit. I'm fairly certain he has the right to not be standing in a line. It'd be nice if he did, but I don't think it should be a requirement.

Plus, he's doing it because Obama and the rest of us socialist have recruited him to do so, and help start the trend of disparaging the flag!

Похвалите Мать Россия!

Those two things are incompatible. However, you are allowed to substitute black pudding or, if Scottish, deep fried Mars Bars.
