Who knew these two castoffs have been key components to the re-emergence of their respective teams. You got a guy in Frye who has stepped into the starting line-up of the Suns and is one of the reasons they have the best record in the West. Where did Frye's 3 point shooting come from? Frye has talents but the coaching staff didn't know how to use them. You got a guy in Sergio who is shooting 47.4% from behind the arc and one of the reasons why the Kings have been playing well lately in their 3 game winning streak. The Kings are 8-8 and look very much a playoff team. Frye and Sergio were misused by Nate, Nate tries to tell players to play a certain way and not use their strengths. When I look at our current roster, I can't help but think that once Bayless and Rudy leave, will they turn into better players as well?
Frye has stepped into a system that's simple and fast. Basketball is a simple game and somehow Nate makes it slow and complicated, even with his two-play playbook.
Sergio has had like 2 good games this year, I believe. Half the games he has had a DNP. I don't think he is a reason for the King's re-emergence.
Isn't Sergio putting up better numbers. PER 36, than either Blanky or Miller? Little perspective here. Sergio is shooting 47% on 3's - good for him. However, he's only 9/19 - we're talking about a small sample size. He's had 5 DNP-CD, and 4 more games of < 10 minutes. He played very well last week. He had similar (maybe not quite as good) stretches in Portland, followed by stretches where he looked like a D-Leaguer. Channing Frye is shooting the ball really well. Who didn't know he could do that? It's the one thing he CAN do. Unfortunately for the Blazers, they needed a b/u PF who could rebound and play defense. They didn't need another perimeter jump shooter, especially one who's 6'11". He's a liability on defense, and gives up way to many offensive rebounds. I remember him not being able to get rebounds on missed FT's on several occasions. He has his moments, but he just can't do what Portland needs a b/u PF to do (play defense, rebounds, score a little in the blocks) Nice to see him playing well in Phoenix, but the Suns will realize when his jumper isn't falling, he's worthless out there. Sorry Channing, you're a heck of a nice guy.
Hey, he was better at those things than Channing was. But you're right, TO isn't the right guy for that spot either.
i will say this... frye would be better then anyone we have on our bench at backup pf. with outlaw out... he would be a nice fit. sergio.... good god. he stinks. i hope nobody is trying to make a case that we are playing poorly because of missing these 2 lol.
Wrong. He'd be the same as last year. In Phoenix he has Nash and an uptempo offense, both of which get him good looks. Being able to catch & shoot in rhythm, and not having to worry about being yanked if you miss a couple go a long ways. Nothing about Frye's game makes him a "nice fit" for Portland.
I also remember Channing averaging about 10 rebounds per game during the end of one of his years here and proving he could play good defense. No, he was a player to keep that Nate didn't treat well.
Frye has a slightly better-than-average PER of 16 (and still plays no defense). I have a hard time seeing how he would help the Blazers. Sergio, on the other hand, has a PER of 22.9 (and still isn't playing any defense). Sergio would be ideal for the 'running' second unit (that rarely actually runs).
It's not just shooting. Per 48 minutes, Frye has increased 0.4 rebounds 0.8 assists 0.5 steals 0.7 blocks -0.2 turnovers (i.e. fewer turnovers) -1.0 fouls (fewer fouls) .044 FG% .129 3FG% .043 FT% 8.3 efficiency points http://www.hoopsstats.com/basketball/fantasy/nba/phoenix-suns/team/profile/10/24/13-1-2-eff That is per 48. Since he has increased his minutes 17.5, multiply those per-48 increases by 17.5/48 to find his per-game increases. http://www.hoopsstats.com/basketball/fantasy/nba/phoenix-suns/team/profile/10/24/13-1-1-eff
All I will say is that situation matters and good for them for finding a fit. I will be curious to see if both of those players are able to sustain their torrid shooting percentages, since that is several standard deviations above their personal averages.
He's had 5 good games per minute--He was great last night and 11/23 vs. Memphis, and excellent 11/17 Chicago, 11/27 New Jersey, and 11/21 Houston. This list sorted by efficiency hasn't been updated to include last night's game, his best. http://www.hoopsstats.com/basketbal...rs/sergio-rodriguez/gamelog/10/26/371/1-1-eff He has played in 12 games. Tyreke Evans starts at PG. The sub is Beno Udrih, because he was with the team last year and Sergio wasn't. The starting SG Kevin Martin was injured 1 or 2 weeks ago and Udrih became the starting SG, which made Sergio the top sub at PG. That's why he was DNP a lot and suddenly his minutes increased. He has proven he's at least as good as Udrih and when Martin returns, Sergio may become top sub at PG. These numbers haven't been updated for his great game last night. Efficiency per 48 (NBA.com definition) 24.1 Evans 24.0 Sergio 21.4 Udrih http://www.hoopsstats.com/basketball/fantasy/nba/sacramento-kings/team/playerstats/10/26/1-3-eff
More praise for Sergio here (scroll down). But not, I hope, for his hair-don't: (Why won't it show up here? Oh well, when you scroll down, you'll see it anyway.) Happy for him. But I still see his future being a superstar back in Spain. Maybe Rudy will be joining him.
Nate's biggest weakness is his control-mania, and it destroys most players's shooting rhythms. I don't think Nate is opposed to a running game per se. It's just that the snail's pace the Blazers move at is dictated by the time required for Nate to think and then bark out each play. I truly believe we will never find 8-10 talented players who are comfortable being treated like incompetent, brainless robots. Therefore, no dynasty with Nate.
