Well, this is pretty tough.Steve Nash IS the MVP, but then again, Dallas lost him for Jason Terry, and the Mavericks still won. Here are some key statistics...Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki Together: 276-184Dirk Nowitzki Alone: 118-46Steve Nash Alone: 117-47Let's debate more!!
Comparing a big man with a point guard? It should be Dampier vs. Steve Nash because that's who you guys got instead of him.
I don't get the joke? And ever since Damp has been benched (yes, since Diop became a starter), Damp has become All-Star quality.Letting him go into the game about 5 minutes into it helps him avoid foul trouble, which really killed him. Plus, he plays way more minutes than Diop does, so I'm not lying.Damp had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks last night, so you can't really diss him anymore.Stop trying to act like Charles Barkley.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>And ever since Damp has been benched (yes, since Diop became a starter), Damp has become All-Star quality</div>I wouldnt say all-star quality. He only averaging about 6 points and 8 rebound a game. Thats good off the bench, but An All-star quality?? come on.

So? Two MVP candidates on a team? Let's talk about team accomplishments between them and MVP talk, not their shooting and posting-up and <Censored>.
The thing is the Mavs needed a role player more than a scorer. Though it is obvious that Nash>Dampier Dallas needed that role player that could rebound and shut down the opposing teams big man. Damp can also score a little. It's not about always having the best player but the player that fits best with your team and its needs. As for who is better it is definitely Dirk.
Dallas just didn't need a role player, they needed a big man presense inside, and Damp, along with Diop now, provided that more than Nash could help out by running the offense and being the liability he is on offense.
Dampier's role is to rebound and block shots and stay around the basket. That's a role player. Dallas didn't need a big name player like Nash. It needed to solve its interior problems and Diop and Dampier do that.
See this is the contradiction I see from most people in the media and most of the sites I'm on.They say Dallas really isn't that good, and still is a gimmicky, hasn't proved it yet team, and really isn't elite. But then say that they lost Nash, then Finley, and have a completely different team than they have from 3 years ago(Dirk is the only constant, and Griff was on the 03 team, but was gone till this year), and have stayed one of the top 3-4 teams still. Then they say that Dirk isn't the MVP because his team is so talented, then go on to say they really aren't that talented and can't beat the Spurs, Pistons, or Suns cause they aren't as talented as them.Dallas is a weird team to figure, but peoples flop flopping opinions are even harder to judge.
What kind of comparison is this?<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The thing is the Mavs needed a role player more than a scorer. I like Damp, but we should have kept Nash, he's done nothing but get better and for what money he got, is well worth it. Unlike Damp, whose been inconsistent. We could have got a sub-par center, ie. Diop and be ok. Also, Nash fit well with this team for years, and was a role player.
Nash doesn't play defense. Dallas would be the Dallas of old with all offense and no defense. Dallas could not get away with that anymore and had to pick up players that play defense. Dallas would be better with Diop and Dampier rather than Nash. It comes down to needs and Dallas's offense wouldn't get that much better.

We could have always got a center with a Walker trade or free agency, instead of paying Damp with the money Nash got. And what's Diop got to do with Nash huh? We could have got him with Nash here. That's my point. You don't let a player like Nash go for nothing.
Why would any team give up a quality center for Walker? Walker sucks. Without Dampier and with Nash Dallas's lineup would look like this.Walker/Bradley/MbengaNowitzki/WalkerJ. Howard/StackhoulseM. Finley/DanielsNash/Harris.Talk about soft interior. The only reason Terry came to Dallas is because atlanta thought he was a loser but in reality anyone in his position would be losing as well.

It was his expiring contract that was appealing to teams. Also, getting a center is as important as a pg, and retaining Nash should have been a priority. Getting a center per se these days is not hard, especially when traditional centers are rare. Looking at how well the bigs on Phoenix are doing with Nash, I don't see any problem. Fact is retaining Nash and getting a c down the line would have been better then our lineup now with Terry/Damp. Your projected lineup is crap as well, because if we had retain Nash, who knew what would have happened in the offseason. Don't tell me Walker was going to be here after that horrible year and his expiring contract looming. Oh and Atlanta traded Terry because they were rebuilding, Walker's contract helped create more cap space, Terry had a hefty deal and getting rid of that would help. With your reason, they should have traded the whole team because they were all losers.
If you had Nash your defense wouldn't be weak. The Suns are starting to build a good defense with the run and gun style. You guys could have done the same. With Avery as the coach I think you guys would have an improved defense with that great offense.
