At a middle school in West Linn the teacher calls the males motherf****** as a term of endearment and on his reading list (among other usual books) is How to Have Sex Like a Porn Star, and How to Contact the Homo In You (or something like that). The parents were never informed. Now, most 8th grade guys would probably like those books, but I find the teachers comments and this assigned reading over the top for middle school. Am I just being an old fuddy?
There is none. My boss showed the list to me. Due to some parent outrage, he's going to a meeting at the school. He's a bit upset over the whole thing himself.
what school? Who was the teacher? It wouldn't surprise me that this was a practical joke played by a student, trying to get a teacher in trouble, because the school would not allow that.
No, it's true. Several kids have brought it to the attention of their parents. It's a school in the West Linn school district.
You don't think several kids could've banded together and made a practical joke/get back at a teacher? If this was real, this would be on the news already. I'm not saying it's a fake, but it doesn't sound too real. Why would a teacher assign those books for reading? And furthermore, why would the teacher print off the names of books that are obviously not allowed in schools (because of the hard-copy availability of it)? It could be a crazy teacher, there is obviously some out there, but this just sounds too much like something a kid would think of doing to get a teacher in trouble. saying it's in the "West Linn" district seems vague. It's not like it's 1 middle school in the WLSD.
Look, IT'S FRIGGIN REAL. Geeze, not everything is on Fox news, ya know. As to the particular school, out of respect to my boss, I'm not naming it. Gads, julius, are you of the internet generation or what?
Local news. No, I'm of the generation where people actually would make up stuff to get back at teachers (or bosses, or pro athletes) and usually do a sloppy job at it. And this reeks of it. If I was a parent and this happened, I'd first call the teacher and see if it was real, and if it wasn't, I'd talk to the principal at the school. And if it was, I would contact the principal at the school and let them know, and then I'd call the news because I'd want the teacher fired. As for the books, the one about the "homo" thing, is probably the "Homo Handbook: Getting in Touch with Your Inner Homo: A Survival Guide for Lesbians and Gay Men". Now, it depends on what the class is (although obviously you'd need admin approval and parent approval), but what if this is an after school transgendered/gay/straight alliance type club? That makes a difference. But at the same time, the book only had a running of 25K books, so getting it would be somewhat difficult. The how to have sex like a porn star or whatever, has no educational merit for an English class (not even a college class could use it for anything more than "how to write a book about crap"), OR an after school club. Why would a teacher assign those two books in a regular class (I'm assuming an English/lit class)? There are obviously books to assign that might cause some parents to be a little confused or find the books offensive, but why would a teacher risk their career to include two books obviously against the school's policy? Unless that teacher is a complete moron, a teacher wouldn't do that. Students can easily get their hands on a letter-head from the school (or use one of the form letters sent home from schools) and re-create a book list. It's not that hard to do.
Good point. If this is true, spread the word. None of us would want a teacher, let alone an adult, providing this kind of crap to kids OR calling them those names as a term of affection.
Just to give you an idea of how far people go I have met someone who is going to sign his professor up for a subscription to NAMBLA through the teacher's university mail as a joke on April Fool's. Imagine what some bitter kids would do to get back at a teacher they may not like.
Meh. big deal. At Jesuit when it was all male, teachers were really abusive of the students and joked like this all the time. no one really gave a shit though and it was fun actually. then when the girls came it became all politically correct. don't get me wrong, having chicks in class was fun and all but when it was all male, you could get away with a lot more crass behavior.
Are you sure that most 8th grade boys are into sex? I was still into religion and purity. I changed in high school, not in junior high. As for your baseless rumor that you're so sure is true, people circulate stories through e-mail all the time that are made up, but purport to be true. It's propaganda to push someone's point of view. During the Iraq War I got flagwaving stuff from acquaintances that was supposedly written by the grunt on the ground, but was written by propagandists in the U.S.
The only thing I found (and heard on the radio) was about a librarian KGW.com And it was in a First Amendment class (or discussion). No references to the books though (or yet. there might be another story out there).
Look, being true or not doesn't matter. Let's focus on how is the best way to over-react to a dubious situation, and try to find a way to blame Obama, Liberals, Brandon Roy or Immigrants.
Geeze, this thread took a stupid turn. Then again, I have often taken a hand in doing the same thing.
