Is it possible to bring over Joel Freeland mid-season?

    Re: Dumb question

Who knows. I doubt it since he's under contract with his current club and the NBA and Euro teams usually respect each other's turf.

    Bring Over Freeland Now?

Is it possible to bring over Joel Freeland right now and get him on a plane to meet us in New York?

We don't need two identical threads on this topic. Please merge.

    Re: Bring Over Freeland Now?

On the one hand, he is under contract with Unicaja Malaga.
On the other hand, players in Europe have been released from contracts before (e.g., Pops Mensah-Bonsu last year) and Unicaja is sucking majorly in the ACB this season, so might regret their fairly expensive investment. I'm guessing they wouldn't just release him, though, as there's a lot of money to be made in buyouts...

I'm sure KP has lawyers checking out right now, particularly as one main reason Freeland didn't want to come over was that there was unlikely to be minutes for him with Joel, Greg and LaMarcus healthy.

(One last thought, though: Freeland's agent might advise him to stay in Spain one more year because if so (I believe) he won't be bound by the rookie scale any more.)

Yup, and there's the rub. Joel could negotiate for up to the full MLE (which I doubt he would get anyway) but he's probably due way more than the slotted salary of a 30th overall pick.

It simple. Paul Allen could have him sign a contract, and then have one of his companies offer him an endorsement deal that has enough payout for a buyout in it. Who cares if he ever makes a commercial for the company. The main thing would be he gets the buyout. Then he could come over. But we would have to probably cut Mills.

Yeah, that would probably end up costing us serious draft picks in the future as sanctions from the NBA...

They need more guards like we need more injuries. Seriously, Wallace is an idiot. I suppose why not. Add talent. Uhm, ball dominant chuckers galore, adn now you're going to add one more? WTF? And what's wrong with our board? We must be slow. Someone hasn't started a speculation thread that with them signing him, they'er probably trading us Conley?

Yea just like it did in the Chris Dudley situation? Sure I admit that part of it are very sketchy. But if the rules don't prohibit such a move, then they don't. They may very well prohibit such a move. Devising evil schemes to skirt the rules is just something I do as a pastime. :devilwink: None of it is really serious!:stirthepot:

Apparently Wallace is no chemistry major.

Back to the Freeland subject. I heard KP interviewed the other day on Canzano's show and he mentioned that he was going to be looking at Europe for a potential mid-season move.

Taking into account that he's already got Joel's draft rights and the fact that he's been playing pretty well in the ACB, maybe he's just waiting til he gets some healthy bodies back and has at least little flexibility to move guys like Mills or Pendergraph along with maybe Miller to get a decent wing (perhaps a guy like Butler as Hollinger suggested the other day). After a move like that, the roster is down to 12 or 13 which allows him to bring Joel over without having to waive anybody. :dunno:

I guess my question is, at what point do we get an injury exception? Or do we get one at all? We have multiple players out for season. Is it possible we can get an injury exception for them, use that to buy out Freelands contract and bring him over?

Nope. Injury exception deadline was November 30th. We get nothing.
