Did anybody else notice Monty roaming the sidelines tonight. We interviewed Nate today and he said he was supposed to stay seated all game. So there was Monty working the coaches box shouting out all of Nate's instructions. Why do I bring this up? Cause on the last road trip, that was Dean's spot! Now all of a sudden Monty has been bumped into that spot. I just found it a bit interesting. Maybe there is a change in the pecking order.
I found this interesting as well. I first found it interesting that Monty was not selected as the fill-in for the previous road trip!
Dean, good guy, doesn't have a good record with our team. If you recall, it was Dean who coached us when we lost in Utah, ending our 13 game win streak. We won 4 more after Nate came back. It was a 17 game win streak for Nate. Then, this season, we go 1-3 on a road trip that should've been 2-2. Milwaukee was a heartbreaker, yes, but we should've been ready for the Knicks.
My bet is that the players can relate to and respect Monty more. I've heard them say many good things about Monty, yet never have I heard them say anything about Dean. "if you can't say something good about someone, then say nothing at all."
I really wish that Monty was the one coaching on the road trip. I think the guy has some real potential.
I heard Monty on The Game yesterday. I got the impression that he didn't feel entirely comfortable leading the team on the road. Perhaps the plan was to let Dean coach the road trip, since he has a lot more experience than Monty, and that Monty would take over the lead with Nate literally backing him up at home.
I can tell you one thing, Monty is much more personable then Dean. Great guy, he will make a great head coach one day.
I just think it would be killer to have a coach named Monty. That way if the Blazers own, they could say they got the full Monty!
If interviews are a reliable source to form an opinion, Monty seems like a much better communicator than Dean.
Like when he communicated to Martell Webster that unless he changed his ways, he wouldn't be a pro much longer?
I don't know/recall anything about that... Please enlighten us. I'm sure your sarcastic response is a follow-up to the other thread where I was somewhat critical of your reading skills, so it's only appropriate I point out that you again missed half of what I said, which is tough to do with a single sentence... If interviews are a reliable source to form an opinion... Quite a stretch to go from interview sound bytes to player relations.
There was an article a while back where Monty pulled Martell aside in the summer and basically has what I call a "black and white" talk with him. He basically told Martell that if he didn't start acting like a pro basketball player, and working on his game like a pro basketball player, and listening to his coaches instead of poo-poo'ing them, he wouldn't be a pro basketball player much longer. It was about 2 summers ago.
So, are you saying: a) that was a good example of Monty as a communicator, or b) an example of him communicating poorly because Martell hasn't changed significantly?
I think it is an example of him being a good communicator. Because I do think Martell was on his way out of the league back then, and he is still in it. I think it is also important because he is not afraid to tell player how it is. He is in command. Where with Nate, there are a lot of signs that point towards the thought pattern that he has control issues with the team.
