I tend to think that there was just as much of this stuff going on in the past. It's just that we're hearing about it more than we used to.

Good point there. We hear about it all the second it happens these days. Lately I just have been feeling like the morale of our nation is just terrible. Seems everyone hates each other.

We had guns years back too. I grew up in the midwest, we brought our rifles to school during deer season. We didn't kill anybody.:dunno:

That is because... wait. I wont go there.

Let's just say it is more light in the mid-west. If you catch what I am throwing.

    In large part it is.

Insanity and violence rises whenever the economy fails.

Bush killed the global economy nearly single-handedly.

    Consider your avatar.

Do you think that helps the situation?

I like you. I hear what you are saying. But the avatar is me making fun of PapaG and his little 'should I call the cops over this avatar' thread. I couldn't let that rest.

Now that you know that, do you think I should take it down? Just curious. You say to and I will.

As population increases, even if the number of people with mental problems is roughly the same percentage of folks as it was before, it still means there are more crazy people in our society to do stuff. The type of stuff that makes the news. So it will seem like more in general, but it is no more by percentage than any other year.

Now that being said, just remember: It is the people who can't handle being insane who make the rest of us look bad!:ghoti:

No, and why the apples/oranges comparison?

    I don't get your point.

I've owned guns and knives since I was 5, so if you are implying guns were harder to get in the past you're ill-informed.

All things considered, it is harder for a 15 year old to kill someone now with a gun than "years back" because kids nowadays have no clue how to operate a firearm correctly and with precision. My 6th grade classmates back in the 60's could likely beat today's average National Guardsman on the rifle range.

If I killed it would be in self defense of course, and would likely be with a pen or finger to the jugular, or a knife if I had more time to react.

While I often carry a gun, it's more of a "when all else fails" kind of thing, because relying on one exclusively opens a can of worms. Shooting in a crowd or vehicle, or in haste, can have serious side consequences. A knife, pen, or pointy stick is a much more precise tool for the job.

PapaG has concerns for his family's safety. Given your recent experiences, you know that's not a little thing that just goes away. :sigh:

PapaG has no way of knowing if NB3 is just an irritating smartass, or if he's tomorrow's Breaking News on Nancy Grace's show. Probably just a smartass, but do you gamble your family's life on it? :tsktsk:

I abhor censorship, but I do believe with freedom comes responsibilty for your actions.

If I threatened someone's life in jest, and they killed me, boy would I feel like an idiot.

that was my point. It is easier for someone to reflexively pull a trigger and cause a mortal wound than cause a mortal wound with a knife.

My point is that it is easier to kill a person with a gun than a knife. Perhaps I am ill informed that guns were less common. I did however mean 50 years ago, not 30.

    So did I, as I'm over 50.

When I was a boy, all my friends who had Dads had guns.

Although my grown sons have guns, few of their friends have them or have ever shot one.

For myself, I feel a knife would be much easier to kill with, if the prey is human. Quicker, quieter, more damaging, more accurate, easier to carry and use, harder to trace. The only plus a gun has is the ability to reach out farther, and the "scare factor" from the noise. A gun is useless without ammo, but a knife is forever dangerous. In a crowded mall a person could kill hundreds of people with a simple knife.

    911 = box cutters

    Reminds me of Eddie Izzard.

"Guns don't kill people, people do."
"Yeah, well the gun helps though, doesn't it?"

I'm pretty sure the only reason they got away with 911 is because the pilots assumed they were going to be forced to go somewhere like cuba.

My point about guns vs knives, is that less skill and nerves is required to shoot a person in the heat of the moment, than deliver a killing blow from a knife.
