Honestly guys, do we need a trade?

I don't even know what you are asking for here? A disabled player exemption allows you to go pick up a free agent (like Tolliver in the D-league, or some guy out of the league like Shav Randolph). You can't use it to poach a guy or trade for another player on another roster. the only thing that would allow you to do that is a trade exception and we have none. All we do have is 1.4 million in cap space and will probably have another hardship exemption to add another non-guaranteed contract to the roster.

    Negative. From Coon's FAQ #19
It's just about the same thing as if we had a "normal" 3.4M trade exception. Except that we could also use it to sign a FA if we wanted to.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that's why it's much harder to get. A league-approved doc has to say that Joel's out for next year (not extremely out of the question with ruptured patella tendons--as Damon or McDyess). It's not a "temporary, when a guy's out 3 games and you need a stopgap until they're back" exception.

I think we should trade all of our active guys for Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady.

The team needs another big body. Beyond that, there is little sense in trading to try to salvage *this* season.

OTOH, the team needs to see if there are any deals out there that help long term.

Bill Simmons (yes, I know) had an interesting column about the number of teams that are struggling financially. He actually tabbed the Blazers as one of the 7 teams he thinks could take advantage of the situation as the trade deadline looms, and desperation starts to set in. I hope that Boston Boy is right for once in his life!

Bibby was that good before that series. That's just when people noticed it because it was on TV against the Lakers.

Juwan isn't too old. He's my age! He was a stud in high school, a stud in college (two NCAA championship games in his first two years playing with all freshman), and a stud in the NBA (All Star). He's been ready for this. He's stayed in shape and he can handle this.

No I don't think we need a trade.

We should look to make a trade if it improves the long-term talent of this team. I'm not concerned with bringing in help this year, we can sign D-Leaguers for that. But next year I would like to see more talent in our top 8 players. I'm also don't think Miller or Blake have much long-term value to us but they may not have trade value either.

I would like to see us utilize this strategy. A trade such as Blake+Outlaw to New York for Jared Jeffries and Jordan Hill would give us a young talent with upside that can stay on the end of the bench for a few seasons and give the Knicks some precious cap space.

Ah I misunderstood, I guess I thought you were talking about another hardship exemption, not a disabled player exemption.

I would rather see us approach the Clippers for Kaman. They could save beaucoup bucks, and we could get a center. Sounds like a win-win to me.

This isn't the exception we are getting, however. We are getting, or would be getting, the same one we got Tollievr with. It's not a dollar amount, it's a roster exception, to allow you to go over 15 (or 16) spots to have enough active players. The dollar exception(the one Houston got for Yao) has to be on an injury before November 30th, I believe.

It would take a hell of a lot more than Outlaw and Blake to land Kaman, though.

36 for an NBA player? That is ancient. It's not so much about being able to do it for short stretches, it's the grind of a long season where I see his body breaking down and the recovery game to game not being there. It's true that compared to joe public Juwan is in amazing shape, but 36 year old bodies don't hold up well playing 30+ minutes a night, regardless of conditioning.

    I'm looking at Samuel Dalambert.

Dude's under-performing right now (6pts, 8rebs, 2blks in 25mpg) and is owed $12.5 mil this year, and $13 mil next season. If we could package Webster, Outlaw, and Blake for the guy, we could have a legit center for this season and a $13 mil expiring contract for next that we can dangle in trade offers after GO returns. Hell, we could bring that to $20 mil expiring if we add Andre.

Doing that move leaves us without a SF.

Temporarily, yes. But Batum will return, and Rudy and Cunningham can play backup minutes (along with some sparse minutes for Roy). We wouldn't have a true 10 man rotation, but we don't really need two good players at each position to be successful, as long as we have at least one at each.

But we wouldn't have any. Temporarily, we have Roy dinged up, and now he'd be starting at SF for at least a month. Maybe two. I think we can weather the storm with Howard and Pendergraph up front, and look around the deadline, if we have Rudy and Batum fully healthy, to make a move for a big. But with all the injuries, I don;'t see how you can intentionally gut the team even more.

You're prob right. I'm at a loss for whom we can actually trade now.
