I've really never liked the guy but I think it's kind of odd how he hasn't been writing a whole lot during these "down" times. Fair weather journalist? Maybe. Complete douche bag, absolutely.
I think it was only Freeman that went on the road trip, and Quick is probably working on his Top 40 Blazers of all-time piece that I assume is coming out soon. I think the two flip-flop on who goes on road trips time to time. I don't think it has anything to do with Quick just being a fair weather guy.
I enjoy bashing Quick, but this assumption isn't very solid. He's paid by the Oregonian to write X amount of articles each week. If he's writing a bigger piece, I'm sure he's not obligated to churn out a daily piece. If he's doing a series like the behind the lockerroom doors thing like last year, it would be safe to assume he'd write an article after each game. He doesn't just get to turn in an article whenever he feels like it. It's not like the Oregonian is his personal blogging site.
Yea Im sure it has absolutely nothing to do with him being a fair weather journalist...I just think it's weird that around this time last year he was pumping out articles left and right. I never go to OLive anymore for any sort of news so maybe that has something to do with it.
He's been getting a "lesson" about basketball from Jaynes. It's not uncommon for a beat writer to have a poor understanding of the basics of the sport. He's probably a nice guy and that's why he still has a job at the Oregonian when everyone else is getting fired, let go, or is leaving/have left. Anybody can write a sports article without any training at all. There's little to no talent necessary and anyone could be trained to do so in two weeks. Writing human interest stories is much different, and he's been fine at that, too. It's just too bad that he's from the only "paper" in town. If there were 3 or 4 papers, it's likely he'd be last or next to last on the "knowledge" list when it comes to understanding basketball. Everyone has their forte and basketball clearly isn't his. I have no objection to any of his articles, though, as I said, they're well written and he gets the information out there, which is what he's paid to do. If he was knowledgeable about basketball, that would be a bonus.
