? That must be a joke, but, looking at the other threads you're involved in, you might just be serious...

Monta is easily an all-star caliber player. The reason Monta won't be an all-star is because his team is one of the worst in the league.

in general, 5 guards make the allstar team. monta doesn't have a shot over kobe, paul, roy, nash, and deron. that's the real reason he won't be an allstar.

Ellis has better numbers than Roy. They are basically equal in rebounds/assists, and basically equal in shooting percentages, but Ellis is better in points (25.0 vs 22.2) and steals (2.4 vs 0.9).

Not that Monta is clearly the better player, but he deserves an all-star slot just as much as Roy does, if not more. The difference is, Roy is on a very good team, a very deep team, with many talented players and a 19-12 record. That's why he would probably get the nod over Ellis.

Ellis is just on a bad team and won't get acknowledged until they can compete for the POs.

The quality of the team does matter, and also it's all about name recognition, which nobody on the Warriors has. It's just like congresspeople, once they get elected, it's extremely difficult to get them removed or replaced. The whole thing is a joke anyway, Yao Ming will probably get more write-in votes than anyone else despite not even having played. Why do they let people vote 25 times each (or unlimited with multiple email addresses) online anyway? How can you take that seriously?

Monta absolutely deserves an All Star nod. He's put up monster numbers this year and is rising up the ranks in the SG position.

Will he get the nod? Probably not. His name doesn't carry the notoriety of a Deron Williams or Brandon Roy or a Steve Nash because of the team he plays on.

yeah, disregard minutes and pace and things look really well for ellis. but that's not exactly the point.

yeah, the blazers were really deep going into the year. batum, outlaw, oden, and joel all being basically out for the year and rudy missing a bunch of games kinda changes things. their starting center right now is juwan howard.

so yeah, roy is on a good team. the team is good because he's there. there's no way that monta is as deserving as roy(or any of the other guards i mentioned).

Last I knew, the ASG wasn't about who's on a good team (or at least it's not supposed to be), it's about popularity for starters, and then who's playing well for the bench (essentially). Monta is playing as good as basically any other SG in the NBA.

gotta play defense and/or win generally to make the all star team unless you are getting voted in by the fans.

hes gotta beat kobe/nash/roy/billups/etc. it could happen i would say he is in the discussion.

? Monta Ellis is second highest in the league at 40.9 minutes. Brandon Roy is 8th in the league at 38.7 minutes. So, Monta plays 2 more minutes a game. I don't see how that matters at all. If anything, Monta should get the nod there as being more durable.

    ?

Yeah, but those most of those injuries just happened recently. Oden was with them for 21 games, averaging 8.5 rpg and 11.1 ppg. You don't think that helped Portland get to their 20-12 record? Pryzbilla has played every game this year, except yesterday. So he played 30/31, and played a good part in that record as well. It's not like they've been hobbled all year, and Roy has been carrying them on their back.

Brandon Roy is an awesome player, no one here seems to be questioning that. In fact, he's one of my favorite players in the league, and I believe he could be a future Hall-of-Famer (which I don't necessarily believe about Monta).

The only thing I'm questioning is what you said in your first post:

That's just a laugher. Monta already is an all-star caliber player. He's playing at an all-star level. He just probably won't get voted in because he is kind of unknown and is on a horrible team. Not because he isn't as deserving as other players such as Roy.

pretty simple. the pace at which a team plays effects their numbers.

except that i named 5 guys who are more deserving than monta. which means he isn't going to make the allstar team. and when there are that many guys better than you at your allstar position, you don't deserve to get votes.

Or, to be put it more accurately, his team is one of the worst in the league when he is on the floor.

-9 with him, +15 without him. How much better is he really making his team?

That's irrelevant and unfair. This team is so flawed that it would take a miracle for Monta's efforts to make an impact in the win column; take away Monta and we'd still have as many wins/losses. Right now, he's doing everything he can. His play isn't taking away from anyone's development.

In fact, when Stephen Jackson was here, Monta was unable to get into any sort of rhythm or flow; now it's officially his team. He's now taken his game to another level on a nightly basis. We haven't had that type of player since Baron Davis. When Baron first arrived, his play didn't impact the win column that much either until we made the trade with Indiana.

That's not a great example because that team (before the Indiana trade) was still infinitely better than what we have now, but it points out that just because a team has an all-star caliber player on the team, it doesn't necessarily make him better or worse for the team. Take Kevin Durant for example. He was great last year and the Thunder still sucked. He's great this year and the Thunder are much improved.

Ah, I see, like tempo. Yes, this does make a difference in stats. GS averages 10 more points per game than Portland, so that has somewhat of an impact on point differential. Of course, those extra 10 points are spread out between many different players. Hard to quantify, but I don't see that having too much weight in terms of all-star voting.

That has nothing to do with whether they are deserving or not. It doesn't matter if you named 10 guards, they could all be worthy. In my opinion, Tyreke Evans is playing at an all-star caliber level right now. That doesn't mean he'll get voted in.

Monta Ellis is an all-star caliber player. Just like Roy is. They are both deserving. Doesn't mean they'll both get voted in. Those are two separate issues.

There's a lot of variables which go into that stat.

He plays 40 minutes a night. Usually, the only time he is off the court is during garbage time, which is usually the last parts of 4th quarters when the blowout is official.

For example, 3rd string PG A.C. Law was +20.1 on the court, -6.7 of the court. Looks like the Bobcats landed a superstar in that Stephen Jackson trade...

Or what about scrub-master Devean George? He's +19.8 on the court, -5.7 off the court. Should he be the new franchise PF? (actually, don't answer that, he may be worth a try at this point)

Or, the Warrior's new D-League pick up, super-scrub center Chris Hunter. He's +10.1 on the court, -7.0. off the court. Going by +/-, I'd have to vote him onto the all-star team!

I'm not saying Ellis is the next Jordan. I'm just saying that at this point in the season, based on the way he has played, he is playing at an all-star caliber level. I don't see how that's really up for debate, and I'm not even a big Monta fan.

Monta will make the all-star team eventually, it just probably won't be on the Warriors (historically speaking). :(

I'm sure if people are complaining about Monta, they must also be complaining about Russell Westbrook not getting more hype. Plus, there's always that popular player who is injured that gets a ton of votes... a la T-mac, Grant Hill, and Yao Ming. Casual fans should not vote. It should be players. casual fans are the worst judge of who should get to go.

Unless he's having a spectacular season individually, I don't think player who's playing on a sub .300 team should be getting an all-star nod. Ellis has a 16.9 PER (most all-stars are 18+) and he has no discernible positive impact on the scoreboard based on the results so far this season. His per game numbers look nice because he's playing way too many minutes and his team plays at a break-neck pace. But that should not mask the fact that Ellis has been a very low efficiency player -- he falls in the 18th percentile in offensive efficiency amongst guards that have played at least 150 minutes this season, according to basketball-reference.
