Oguchi Onyewu will be out for 3-4 months with a torn patella tendon. Bad news for the US and for Onyewu personally. He's been struggling to break in with AC Milan and this set back won't help him any at all. He'll also be out as the US travels to Denmark in November and could be out of shape for the friendlies in early March. This also greatly hinders his chances at a loan for playing time out of Milan.
Not as much as not playing with Milan will. The fact that he probably won't get loaned out over the winter transfer period is what troubles me the most. He'll be back from this injury in time to get in shape. He just won't be playing too much.
Looks like the early estimates were way too optimistic. Ives reports that Onyewu will be out for six months after his surgery. That puts his comeback around April, as long as everything goes to play. Will that be enough time for Gooch to get back to full speed (already a relative term here) before the World Cup?
Good news and bad news posted by Ives today: Onyewu, barring any set backs, should be back by March. This is the good news. The bad news is that this was reported in Canada...using information supplied by Bob Bradley?!?!?!?!?!?!? All of the nation's media outlets were scooped by the Canadians on a story about an American defender, using the coach of the US national team as a source? Seriously?
Jesus, that is a lengthly lay-off. OT: I would like to say agoo, Altidore played a great against United a couple of games ago...
I'm hoping he begs Milan for the opposite of the Beckham treatment and he gets sent to MLS. If he starts there in March, he'll be in preseason training camps and would be in mid-season form by the World Cup. Its not the most skilled league (understatement), but it would challenge him physically and let him know what he's got going on in the knee.
After Ives brought some amazing news yesterday regarding Charlie Davies' comeback (seen in my post here), he continues today with Oguchi Onyewu's comeback. Onyewu still has some minor swelling in his injured knee, but is otherwise back to his normal, beastly self. I haven't had the chance to read through this fully, but some highlights are Onyewu's plans to return to Milan next month where he hopes to prove himself and make it a good move, the developing relationship between him and Davies who have been rehabing together, and a comment on Dempsey's injury. US Trainer Jim Hashimoto is overseeing the rehabilitation of both players together and after reading about Davies comeback from a situation where he really should be dead, the Onyewu news isn't surprising. However, its still great as the US will be in desperate need of him in front of Tim Howard this summer.
It appears Onyewu is back in training with AC Milan. As Ives posted, here's a training video from the AC Milan website. This is a good day.
Gooch twittered today that he restarted full training with AC Milan. That previous video was just him doing some cardio work with the trainers. For the record, this puts Davies, Gooch, and Stuart Holden back training at full speed with a bit over a month to go.
