Is Jeff Pendergraph the new Dutch Savage? Notice how they both wear the same mysterious knee pad below the knee? He was awesome tonight, with his fourteen boards. And you gotta love what he said in his recent interview with Columbian reporter Brian T Smith. From now on I'm calling him "Savage". He's tough, and he brings it every night. Dutch Savage was a renowned professional wrestler in the late sixties into the seventies.
Mofo's ugly as sin and his game is pretty ugly too - but you gotta love him. Uhh, hope he doesn't read these boards =P
Dutch Savage was famous, and very popular in this area. Still lives around here too. Rumor had it Dutch had some secret weapon hidden in his kneepad which he used to finish off his opponents.
Dutch would be a cool nickname for him... even though Pendergraph is an Irish name. I think because Dutch is the name of Arnie's character in Predator.
Remember when our 2nd rounders were bums like Reggie Smith, Kevin Thompson and Boumtje Boumtje? And Ha?
KP is an awful GM. Not to mention having three first round picks stashed in Europe. What was he thinking? He clearly hasn't done anything since drafting Roy and Aldridge.
Anyone remember the name of the wrestler Dutch Savage is wrestling? Think his name was Lonnie or something like that.
He almost got his first double double! Perhaps next game? And Dante's starting to pick up a little bit. I would suspect their average games will be about 7 rebounds a game and 7 points a game, if they get 15 min.
Learn me please, how is 'The Savage' racist? I have never heard that term to be racist before. Just asking, not trying to be a smart ass.
Savage as a noun was used in the 19th century (primarily the British, who were colonizing back then) to refer to Africans, who were not Anglicanized. Americans also used it to describe the Native Americans. In both cases, "savages" were considered difficult or impossible to "civilize" and were often enslaved (as porters for the British, or, you know, picking cotton in the US) or slaughtered (in the case of the Native Americans). And there's this whole "feral man-animal" imagery thing that's a little uncomfy when "savage" as an adjective is directed at a black guy. Me, I say we call him Scotty, cause he's always "givin' 'er all she's got, cap'n!" But, I'm also a huge dork.
Savage seems like it veers a little toward racist territory, to me. Dude is a warrior, for sure. I haven't seen that type of aggression from a blazers player in a LONG time. Great to see. And check this out; SMALL sample size, but he is ranking 3rd on the team in PER! http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/POR/2010.html Give it up for KP on this one; I am pretty sure he'll want to stay here for the long haul, too, after we hooked him up despite injuries.
"Savage" has in the past been synonymous with Native American, or more generically any "tribesman". It could very easily be seen as a racist term.
I like him a lot, bordering on full-on mancrush. He keeps hinting that he has more in his toolbox, too (probably offensively). You usually hear him drop a "This is what coach has asked me to do for now, and I'm doing it." like he has more to offer. After his elbow jumper the other night, I bet he has a shot out to 10-12 feet, but simply isn't being asked to score yet.
Oh cool thanks for letting me know. I have never heard Savage as a racist term. I don't feel it sounds racist at all. But that is just me! Maybe we should think of a new name? Sucks though, I liked Savage!
