All marriage should just be civil unions. Let the church goers that are so concerned about their marriage rights fading if gays marry have "marriage" through their church, and allow the states to only perform or whatever civil unions. Then, if a church wants to allow gay marriage, it can.
Why is marriage even regulated to begin with? My idea is that we totally deregulate it period. That way there is nothing to fight over. Make marriages similar to business mergers for purposes of property disputes. Make it so you can purchase benefits for people deemed "dependants". What would this do? 1. The whole marriage controversy would go away. We would quit hearing about it in the news all the time. 2. There is no reason that married folks who don't have dependants are taxed any different than anybody else. End that bullshit. 3. Anybody who had dependants who needed insurance, etc would be able to purchase it. Game over. Stupid controversy done with.
Govt. wants to regulate anything that is fun or profitable. Get them out of our lives, and leave the gay people who want to be married the hell alone.
I kind of find it stupid that it is illegal to have more than one wife, when you can have 8 live in girlfriends with kids. To make it even more crazy, they could be kinky S&M practicing girlfriends! Oooh the sacriledge!
That is why my business merger based model makes sense. It's just like merging businesses. When a person leaves, its just like splitting one off.
not even close. they have equal rights all the way through recognized by that state, the only thing different is the name of the institution. marriage or civil unions. but thanks for trivializing the struggles of blacks dealing with separate restrooms, drinking fountains, etc and equating it to simple nomenclature.
