We will be in Philly next Monday for like 3 nights. We were wanting to shoot up to NYC and were thinking of taking the train. I honestly have never hopped on Amtrak and was wondering if anybody on here had much experience in the NorthEast and if that would be a good way to go. Just a day trip, back by that night. Thanks!
Used to live in NJ and made many trips down to Delaware, so I can attest to the fact that Amtrak on the east coast is far more reliable, and used way more than on the west. Excellent alternative to driving. I recommend that over taking 95 or the NJ Turnpike anyday. There's plenty of trains daily, so scheduling shouldn't be a matter.
I used to live in NYC and would go to philly just for the cheesesteaks....and for the day. we would always take the bus which was really easy to do. you might consider this as well. p.s. the bus station is right in the middle of town.
Yeah, just go to 30th Street Station in Philly and it's an easy trainride to Penn Station in NYC. Great way to go. At Penn Station you can transfer directly to subways or head out onto the streets. You can get tix in advance through amtrak.com, but you can also usually get them at the station when you arrive, at least if it's not rush hour. Check the schedules online at least, there are frequent departures. The Acela Express is very comfortable and modern, but it probably costs $100 or more one-way; other trains could cost as little as $45. Even if you had a car, the train is much, much better - and you don't want a car in NYC anyway.
Taking the train is a blast man. Very relaxing. You can have a drink on the way, chill with your buds. Good times.
The concierge at our hotel said that the train station in Philly is only a couple blocks away. I think this is what we will do. Thanks my peeps!
At the risk of getting grief from the manly sports fans here, if you have extra time check out the Philadelphia Art Museum. It's absolutely world class, with lots of cool exhibits - and the building itself, and its setting, alone is worth the trip. Check out the armor exhibit, for example - including horse armor from the 1500s.
Thanks man, but I've been to Philly probably 5 or 6 times. The best thing there is Gino's CheeseSteaks though!
