OT: Arenas to be charged with felony possession

His $111m contract will be voided.

Good news for Wizard fans. Gil' had THE worst contract in the NBA.

 

Wow it just amazes me the decisions some folks make.

 

This could just be a formality before his plea deal. Word was he was working on a plea, but I believe he needed to be formally charged before entering a plea.

 

He'll probably agree to a plea that reduces the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor - which will likely prevent the Wizards from being able to void his contract.

Charged with felony -> pleads guilty to misdemeanor -> keeps bloated contract

The wizards would still have to worry about repercussions if they did that. What free agent would ever sign there again if they did that?

 

He's clearly in violation of the morals clause, reiterated by their GM, and could have his contract voided.

A felony charge will make this an impossible hill for the Union to climb, IMO.

 

It will be interesting too see if players want to play there in the future, especially since word is that the this whole story was leaked to the media by their GM. If a team is willing to do that to get out of a contract, will they be trusted in the future?

 

Which is why I think he will end up pleading guilty to a lesser charge (misdemeanor). Plenty of NBA players have plead guilty to, or been convicted of misdemeanors without having their contracts successfully voided as a result.

Due to this precident, if the Wizards did try to void his contract over a misdemeanor, they would have a long battle with the union and would probably lose out in the end.

I wonder what the ruling is with a fight with the union? When we medically retired Miles, his contract came off the books immediately, and then only went back on AFTER he played his games. So for Washington, could they, say, void his contract for the Morality clause right before free agency, trade away Butler and Jamison, have a ton of cap space, use it to sign someone, and then get Arenas put back on their books after the appeal process plays out? I imagine it would take a little while to appeal. Seems like maybe they can at least use that to sign a player in the interim. Not that it helps them any. They still suck.

 

I don't know if it's been commented on anywhere, but I find it highly ironic that an incident with an unloaded gun would go down in the Bullets, er, Wizards locker room. Maybe this is their Karma for being too PC and changing the team name?

 

Arenas's contract may not be voided as such but the owners are going to use this situation during the next collective bargining agreement. The player association is going to be eating a whole ton of crap because of GA.

 

All I want to know is, what outcome provides us with the best opportunity to pillage their sinking ship?

 

I assume he'll be acquitted.

Even Washington's un-Constitutional anti-gun law allows the possession of guns without a license in their home and their place of business (locker room).

The second paragraph:

"But, Arenas has reached a plea agreement that would result in little or no jail time, several sources close to the case told The Washington Post. The newspaper had reported if convicted, Arenas could face a maximum five years in jail and a fine."

How can he be acquitted to something he pleads guilty to? If there is no trial (due to a plea agreement), there won't be a convictgion and there can't be an acquittal.

As previously stated, this appears to be part of the process of charging him with a felony and then reaching a plea agreement where he pleads guilty to a lesser charge. This will most likely mean no jail time, a fine, some community service hours and a probabtion period.

If he is released, I'm predicting he signs with the Lakers.

 

that would be scary. but my guess is that if he is released, it will be without his huge contract and he will be looking for some bucks that the Lakers may not be able to supply.

One think I am sure about, KP would not offer him a dollar.
