Whites-Only Basketball League: All-American Basketball Alliance Bans Blacks, Foreigners A whites-only basketball league aims to launch in twelve cities this summer, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle. The All-American Basketball Alliance would also ban players born outside the United States. The league's commissioner, Don "Moose" Lewis, claims that he doesn't "hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now." Thus, he says, the All-American Basketball Alliance would be "a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like." The report includes additional shocking quotes from the commissioner: Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." ... "Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction." Huffingtonpost
There's truth to all sarcasm. Black-style basketball has chased more people away from watching the NBA because it's boring. There's no entertainment value in watching Brandon Roy dribble at the top of the key while 4 others stand around and watch. The flow of basketball games is what's chased most fans away when you ask them, not their skin color. Nobody cares about that. But, that flow comes from black basketball. Unfortunately, that's also white basketball, too. Half of all NBA arenas are more 3/4th's to half empty every night, and it has nothing to do with the economy. They were empty three years ago, too. They'll be empty three years from now. It was black basketball players that made basketball exciting when it was combined with an up-and-down flow to the game. Michael and Dominique Wilkins changed everything. While they were exciting to watch when they went one-on-one for the occasional amazing play, it was still bad basketball. The overall game was boring to watch. Wilkins won absolutely nothing, and Jordan wouldn't have won anything either if he hadn't had Pippen to enhance the flow of the "team" game, so Jordan could do his heroics at the end of games. (and he never would have won anything if Sabonis had gotten over here sooner, or if the Blazers had won the coin flip and gotten Olajuwon). Now, everybody has tried to be the next Michael Jordan or Dominique Wilkins, and everyone falls way, way short, not that it matters that it never leads to a Championship, and that it makes for crappy, boring basketball. I'd love to see the "white" game back, as some try to refer to it. But, it's the up-and-down flow that I want to see back that makes basketball exciting and fun to watch. The all-black team of Clyde-Terry-Duck-Buck-Jerome-Cliffy was the most exciting basketball to ever watch in the history of the game. There were no white players in that. That's the basketball I want to watch, and it's basketball that Nate McMillan abhors with a passion....obviously, because Pritchard keeps giving him more horses to run every season, and we still see the stupid plodding that Nate so loves.
