What like Rudy has been some sort of beacon of light of consistency?

13.5 PER is not "productive". It's not Steve Blake/Channing Frye level, but it's not even average. For a guy who's hurt a lot and doesn't bring a lot (other than playing the passing lane, which is captured in PER with steals) on defense, Rudy is not very impressive right now.

Over the course of the last two years he has been.

Over the same period of time Bayless hasn't managed to string together more a couple of good games in a row.

So yes, overall I would say that Rudy has been more consistent then Bayless.

Rudy hasn't strung together more than a few games in a row either. I completely disagree. The facts are, neither of them is playing up to snuff.

Definitely agree. Rudy was sold as a pretty finished player. He was a leader on the Spanish team, he's three years older than Bayless, and he's known for shooting and passing.

But now that I see what we got, I'm not sure he lives up to the sale. He's too fragile to continue on with the high wire dunks he was known for. And he hasn't shown any ability to add muscle to his frame to better withstand the NBA season. His defense is good if you need somebody to chase around Rip Hamilton, but otherwise he's at a major strength disadvantage against most 2's and 3's, and even a lot of 1's.

Bayless, in contrast, is younger, much more solidly built, and has shown a really nice knack for drawing fouls. He's a physical, aggressive defender, and with a few more years of experience he projects to be a pretty good one. And although he's not the shooter Rudy is, he was known as a pretty good one in college. It may just take a while for that to emerge.

And just imagine how good Bayless is going to be when he's an established player and refs start respecting his game. Right now there's probably one play a game where Bayless doesn't draw a foul but Roy would've, purely on reputation.

That pretty much sums it up. I think eventually both players will be useful to somebody, but both have strengths and weaknesses that I don't think mesh particularly well with the rest of this roster right now and may not ever be mitigated enough to be good fits as role-players (and that's what they are ultimately going to be asked to be on this roster).

    - Rudy: despite some nice court vision, his handles are pretty weak, his D is really tough to watch at times and he's as streaky as they come, and for whatever reason his confidence and verve are completely shot right now, which makes him even more of a liability.

    - Bayless' court vision has never been great, and his tunnel vision has probably gotten worse in the last month after some promising signs earlier in the year, and while he has some nice physical tools (quickness and strength) his subpar length will probably always hinder him as a defensive stopper at the point.

To me both players should not be considered untouchable by any means, but I'd want something good back if one or both are being shipped out.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I would guess it's Batum and Bayless. Those are the two players who are both currently productive and young enough that they still have plenty of upside on the athletic growth curve. Fernandez is very close to his prime and currently not very productive. That's really not the type of player who draws lots of interest league-wide.

Rudy Fernandez and Nic Batum. The package that Washington wanted straight up for Haywood.

I guess I was meaning that Rudy has a productive skill - he can get hot and shoot the 3. I realize that a 13.5 PER isn't good, but to be fair, Rudy isn't allowed to show his entire game with the role that he is playing right now. He had a 15.5 PER last season in more minutes and wasn't dealing with a back injury and subsequent back surgery. As I posted, I'd be more willing to trade Rudy since I think he's a lot closer to his ceiling than either Bayless or Batum. I actually would not trade Batum for anyone short of an All-Star right now, and it would take a nice, big PF that can rebound off of the bench to pry Bayless from me.

As long as their name isn't Roy, and it is a multiple for high end player deal, pull the trigger!:devilwink:
