<div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'>Browns trade Dilfer to Niners for Dorsey, draft pickESPN.com news servicesThe San Francisco 49ers acquired a proven backup quarterback for Alex Smith, getting Trent Dilfer from the Cleveland Browns on Thursday in a trade for quarterback Ken Dorsey and, according to ESPN.com's John Clayton, a seventh-round pick in the 2007 draft. Dilfer, who won a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2001, will give the 49ers depth behind Smith, who struggled as a rookie last season after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft."Trent was a player we had interest in last season," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. "We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers."Dilfer signed a four-year deal with the Browns last year after stints with the Ravens and Seattle Seahawks. He went 4-7 as Browns starter before losing the job to rookie Charlie Frye. Dilfer completed 59.8 percent of his passes last season for 2,321 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions."Trent Dilfer played an important role in the making over of our football team last year," Browns general manager Phil Savage said in a statement. "At this point, to add Ken Dorsey and to give Trent the opportunity to go back home to California is a win-win for all parties."Dilfer, who played in college at Fresno State, has started 107 career games, throwing for 106 touchdowns and 117 interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl with Tampa Bay in 1997 after passing for 2,555 yards and 21 touchdowns.Dorsey started 10 games in his three years in San Francisco, including three last season. He completed 48-of-90 passes for 481 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in 2005.Cody Pickett is San Francisco's third-string quarterback and the team also drafted Michael Robinson in the fourth round last month. Robinson, a quarterback in college at Penn State, is expected to mostly be used as a running back, receiver or kick returner in San Francisco.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.</div>LinkDo you think that the 49ers are worried that Alex Smith isnt ready??

This doesn't matter, Dilfer is old and his time is limited. They just want to bring a veteran in to help Smith out. This was a pretty good move, Dorsey will never have a career in the NFL neither will the 7th round pick that Cleveland got.

Dilf is just a solid back up incase this kid has a rocky year. I think they have confidence in him but having a backup plan doesn't hurt.

Alex Smith sucks, he will be one of those 1st round QB busts we talk about. Dilfer just adds depth.

They didn't want a young QB backing up another young QB. Trent Difler, who won a superbowl, can teach Alex Smith how to win in the NFL.

I was never a fan of Alex Smith, but he gets too much hate. So far he hasnt proven anything but how many rookie quarterbacks do? And why dont you people actually watch the 49ers before you hate on him? What o-line do they got? He was getting torn apart out there, easily the worst pass blocking line in the NFL, and also he progressed a lot at the end of the season. Did anyone actually see the reggie bowl, he played great for the last few weeks. I'm not saying he's gonna make the pro bowl next season, but I think we're watching what is going to be a rich mans Jake Plummer, probably not deserving of the 1st overall pick still though.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Smith is another Ryan Leaf...! He sucks Testicles!</div>ughhh.....what the hell? As far as I know Smith has only played one season, it's kinda hard to tab that bust label on him just yet. Also the 49ers are a freakin mess. Leaf's ability wasn't his only problem, his attitude was 90% of the problem. Smith is a good kid as far as I know, don't just label him a bust just yet.

Yah it's too early to tell, but I think he won't be as good as people think.

The guy doesn't have a great arm.

If this year Alex Smith goes another 15 ints and 1 TD, I would start to question him but it's still early, and the niners did great in this draft as far as putting some weapons around him, also it's hard to be very effecient when your getting sacked every other play, espically as a rookie, you need time in the pocket.

And the offensive line still is terrible this season and they traded away their two dissapointing WR's and now have NOTHING at WR. The 49ers easily have the worst offense in the league and every team will double Vernon Davis because he's the only thing resembling a threat on offense.

Until recently, the tight end was just a bigger fullback, modern defenses havent set a way to stop a great tight end yet, but say they do double Vernon, he's still going to burn them and no safety or linebacker is going to do much, and with them doubling vernon, it gives them more options downfield when they need them. Think Kansas Citys style of pass offense, although not nearly as good, It will help them a lot

Vernon Davis can line up as a WR and do almost anything on offense, he's the only thing resembling a threat. The Chiefs offense? I don't see anything they have in common.

Will it get the same results? No it wont, not even close to the same result. Will their offense be better? yes, maybe in the low 20s as far as total offense rankings, but as far as the chiefs go I was refering more to a Tight end 1st option of the pass. What WRs do the chiefs have? Or you could go way back to the Chargers offense of the 80s, with Winslow dominating with one of the greatest pass offenses ever. There is no way to shut down a great Tight end, They are the definition of a matchup problem. Too big for corners, too fast for Linebackers. And that doesnt mean he will have to catch every pass, but he will open the offense up.

They have a good TE and nothing else. They can't protect the QB and can't block for the RB, Davis won't have the chance to show off his skills with Smith at QB. I'm sorry but a TE doesn't have THAT big of an impact when you have nothing.
