    When you trade for a player and you get his bird rights you can re-sign them for any amount needed to retain them on your roster. Because of this, it is often used as a sign and trade, because if somebody else wants the player but cannot afford them normally they can have you sign them and trade them for players/value in return.

    True, but it also means that we can exceed the cap to sign him and immediately trade him to another team that doesn't have the cap space to sign him as a free agent.

    well the signing part is kinda implied in the SIGN and trade.

    Yeah, but Camby's real value for next year is probably more likely to be what he can bring to the Blazers in a sign and trade than in simply re-signing him...which is what ABM asked about.
