I know there are a lot of trade discussions, but I thought I'd start a deadline thread. What do you think? Is there even any possible deal right now that would help this club? Are they still to raw to assess? Clearly, Curry/Morrow/Tolliver/Beans looked pretty good the other night. Are you willing to give up on Randolph? What about Brandan Wright? Is Riley a fool for not getting something done, or is that maybe just the best call, to stand pat and wait it out...? Will the draft pick be that big a deal (assuming lottery top 5)? Is it worth losing Randolph to shed Maggette-Regrette? Would you trade Monta while his value is on fire? Will he really be this good over the next 5-8 years? Who is the #1 player you would not trade right now? Who is the #1 player you would want to get in a trade right now? Just some potential thoughts, because the deadline is coming up Thursday, and it will be here before we know it... I, personally, right now, would be willing to trade Monta if it meant landing a legit PF. I think Curry is the future, and I'd rather him be the man than Monta be the man. Honestly, as much as I love Monta, Curry's heady play is contagious. Do you see how Monta makes many of the same silly turnovers now that he did in year one? He still telegraphs one-handed passes... he still gets caught in the air... he still forces 3-on-1... Monta is awesome, but I think Curry plays more the right way, and that would bring a winning attitude here. I like watching Curry/Tolliver/Turiaf sharing the ball. I'll take substance over flash. My stance: I would trade Monta for Bosh if Bosh would re-sign. Or Boozer. Or even a David West /Julian Wright package. But, I think it would be best to make it a blockbuster and toss in Maggette, too. I don't know the exact details to make trades successful, but Mags/Monta combine for about ~ $20 mils. I'd consider trading them for something like: Al Jefferson/Corey Brewer/Ryan Gomes ~ $19 mils Elton Brand/Thaddeus Young/Jason Kapono ~ $22 mils Chris Bosh / Andrea Bargnani ~$22 mils David West / Emeka Okeafor ~ $20 mils Carlos Boozer / Paul Milsap ~$21 mils Toss in Brandan Wright if need be? I don't know, I'm just pretty desperate to dump Mags so this team can play like a team, and if it means cashing in on Monta, and also getting post players in return, then I'll do it. Would these trades even be realistic? Or would the other team laugh? Or would GS laugh? It's hard to gauge value right now...
I'm going to go out on a limb and say no trade. But to answer your questions (or most of them): Don't give up AR or BW. Neither will bring much value because of their injuries, certainly nothing close to if either of them pan out. Riley should wait. This team is talented if healthy. Curry/Monta/Evan Turner (hopefully)/AR/Beans with a bench of Morrow/Mags/BW/Turiaf is very solid. Once healthy we can trade for a star but not now. I said earlier I hope we get Evan Turner. I think we've needed a quality SF for a LONG time and I think he's an NBA ready guy. Worst case Jax, best case T-mac. I think Maggette probably has decent value right now, at least to a contender. His contract sucks but he's played well. I only deal him and randolph (and something else) for a star. Don't trade Monta. He's #6 in the league in scoring, near the top in steals, his D is getting better as he gets stronger (although I'd lock a lockdown SF next to him), and his contract really isn't bad. What could we possibly get that would be better than him? Don't trade Monta/Curry or AR/Beans unless part of a package for an All-Star Big. Trade anyone else but no one else will get you much. I'd keep the team together for now. Yeah, Monta has plenty of flaws, but he can score on anyone, pretty much anytime, even if they know he's trying to score. That's a nice luxury to have on your team. Ball movement is great but at the end of the game and in the playoff (if we ever get there again) is often comes down to the best player on the court. Monta can be that guy. That being said, I'd take any of those trades you mentioned, the only one I might not do is the Philly deal. What's up with Brand? I don't think the other teams would consider those offers without at least Beans or AR when he's healthy.
I think no moves should be made. It's a lost season and we shouldn't mortgage the future for inequitable trades. The Warriors will not come out on top for any deals before the deadline. They don't deserve it and the rest of the league knows this. What really needs to happen is for Monta to accept, embrace, and have confidence in Stephen Curry. Start going out of his way to make plays for Curry. Don't take as many shots, don't force so many drives to the basket or contested shots, and just learn from the rookie who happens to be far more mature and the overall better basketball player. Monta is a multi-talented specialist that was given a star-level contract. Deserved, I think so, but he needs to realize that he may need to adapt to a role other than Mr. Franchise. His best efforts haven't won us any games. Curry's play has been good lately and if Monta sees that, looks beyond the fact that he's a rookie, we may have a good beginning here. Curry's recent play does not mean get rid of Monta. It means Monta needs to take a step back and realize that Curry can make him a better player than he is now, which will make the team win more games. This season is lost, but there is still a lot to be salvaged with what we have. Add in AR, BW, Buike, possibly Raja Bell into the mix, and we may just have something. Or, we can always count on the Warriors getting screwed (by themselves and by other teams).
I agree with the no trade, with the one exception, if we can just get rid of Maggette for some value or a one/two year contract...dang that huge contract. I've written volumes on how this organization will take 2 years to regroup basically no matter what, so anything done this year has be done only looking down the line, and not for some "looks good right now" deal.
Agreed, but the Warriors would not get an equitable deal by doing just this. It's just better to be patient and wait for the off-season when the entire league is evaluating their rosters and finances.
Will Maggette ever have a higher trade value than he does right now? He's averaging 21 points and 6 rebounds on %51 shooting. For 9 mils, that looks pretty good on paper. Contenders might value him right now, but by the offseason, when there are a bunch of FA, they may look in a different direction...
I thought there would be some rumor about Mags getting dealt, but nothing. However, it could be a good sign because usually when a rumor breaks, then that deal is dead. The only rumor that seems likely to happen is the Mavs - Wizards (East Coast Warriors getting broke up?) deal. Jeez our arch enemy Mavs are ripping the Wiz off for expiring contracts. I read about an Andris Biedrins rumor, but cannot find it anymore. Basically, he was up for grabs.
Yes because next year he will have one less year on his horrible contract. I think Maggette's numbers will stay pretty consistent on the Warriors.
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/64668/20100213/morrow_could_be_a_trade_commodity/ Anthony Morrow seemed to have made a few teams like him.
I don't think Cleveland would take on Mags for Big Z. What benefit does this give them? The Cavs need talented big players, not another swingman. If they're going for a swingman, I'd imagine they'd get a sharp shooter instead.
I was just going to post the Broussard rumour (Sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard on Monday that the Cavs are also in talks with the Warriors about Corey Maggette) because that would be a gift from heaven; heck I'd take anyone on the Cavs roster to get rid of Maggette; Wally Z, anyone.
The Cavs have been throwing out rumors to get the Wizards to panic and send them Jamison. I think Maggette's trade value has to be at an all time high at this point. He's actually put together a nice "statistical" season.
This trade with the Cavs might go through because there is no way the Suns would deal Amare for J.J. Hickson and Z given that the Suns need to make a run in the playoffs this season. They'd be dead without Amare. Seems like the Cavs are desperate to add talent so they can keep LeBron around. Between Jamison, Murphy, and Maggette, it would seem that Jamison is probably the best player but I think his annual salary is more than Maggette's even though it's 2M less in total so depending on the Cavs cap situation, they might not want to take on that contract (sorry, run on sentence).
I still don't get why the Cavs are interested in Maggette, where is he going to play? He's too small for PF (for anyone except Nelson to use) and he's too slow for SG, so what gives? I mean hey, if they want him, do it before they change their minds, it'd be fantastic, I just don't see why they'd target him.
I know, lol. There's an intangible to every player that you can't weigh objectively. I'll call it chemistry. IMO, chemistry is more important in basketball than individual talent. Frankly, Maggette is bad for team chemistry. He's just not a dynamic ingredient for good team play. It's not even his mindset -- he seems like a great dude who tries to be a good teammate -- but unfortunately he's just an amazing athlete who was tricked into believing he could be a great basketball player. This may seem harsh, but IMO he never learned how to play the right way, how to develop a feel for the court, for his teammates, how to space, how to share, how to rotate, how to be aware... His stats are great, but his intangibles suck. Shane Battier = half the stats, twice the player. Thankfully, it seems like a few teams out there are still being fooled by his stat sheet (the way Robert Rowell was -- or probably still is). Hopefully, Cleveland is ass-brained enough to fool themselves into doing the deal. Then it's their problem.
The only reason i can see the Cavs wanting Maggette would be instant offense of the bench. For the Warriors other than a Salary dump a chance to give the SF position to Randolph?
After watching the all-star game, LeBron and DWade work well together because they cay both play inside and outside. They're both great passers and can take the ball to the hoop. At this time the Cavs can only hope to get a poor man's DWade -- Corey Maggette. Hmm... will that fly ?
