    If you don't know dick about cars you should bring someone who does with you.

    www.carfax.com is a good site to use too on checking the history of the vehicle.

    Average person drives 12,000 to 15,000 per year. If you're going for a car 10 years old then you probably want one closer to the 120K range and if it's the '05 model probably somewhere in the 70K range for mileage.

    also beware an old car with low mileage like a 01 with 20k, usually something went horribly wrong with it at some point. not always though. and be as ambiguous as possible at all times.

    Also ask for recent maintenance records on the vehicle.

    When was the last time they changed the break pads?
    When was the last time they had a smog check?
    When was the last time they changed timing belt, fan belt, & water pump?
    How old is the battery? Have they ever changed the alternator?
    Do they get routine oil changes?

    There's a lot of variables and older cars can have some expensive fixes if you're not careful.
