Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of his death. As an LMU alumnus, I start this thread typing with my left hand.
His name is Hank, not Yank. In all seriousness that was really sad. I wonder what kind of NBA career he would have had.
I was living there when he died and it was big local news. The reason was that his team was nationally ranked, and was off the usual Pac 10 axis of UCLA and USC. I think the rest of the nation is befuddled by all the attention his death continues to get from the Los Angeles media. Other college stars have died while in college over the decades, but they weren't in media centers.
Well, the Lions were on an absolute tear and Gathers was leading the nation in scoring AND rebounding. Pretty crazy, running up the scoring!
Check out USATODAY tomorrow. My boy Wendall Maxey has a great story about Hank. Talked to his coach and Bo Kimble.
A good friend of mine was calling that game on the radio for LMU. He said it was the worse thing he'd ever seen!
