After 13 years, I may have to put my dog to sleep. Over the last 4 years her back legs/hips have gotten worse and worse, now she won't go upstairs and moves outside to lay down then comes in and lays down. And, over the last month she has ate less and less. I had to put two cats to sleep two years ago and that was like losing a friend, this is like losing a brother. I spoke with a vet today and she has a swelling spot on her stomach the vet thinks is liver cancer. Ugh.

very sorry to hear. A pet, especially when it has been around that long is such a huge part of your family. My Dog died when I was 20, and we got him when I was 2. I was an absolute mess.

I've never had to out a dog down but have lost a couple to being run over (bus, car) as well as one just running off (probably to die) in an electrical storm.

As previously mentioned, losing a pet - especially a loyal dog - sucks.................big-time.

    Sorry, bro.

That's rough man I know how it is. I just had to put my cat to sleep who had been my buddy for over a decade. It got cancer and stopped eating. I was crushed for days.

That really sucks, man. My 7-year old pitbull is like my brother and I don't even want to think of what you might have to do with your buddy.

The ending to 'Marley and Me' seriously bummed me out. I wont watch that movie again because of that one scene at the end.

I had to have my dog put to sleep a few years back due to old age and medical problems. My dog was always a little nervous at the vets and I didn't want his final moments to be in a place he wasn't comfortable in.

I waited until I knew that it was going to be sunny and clear in a few days and arranged for my vet to come over. I had a picnic in my backyard for my dog, he was surrounded all of his favorite toys and doggy treats. The vet and his assistant showed up and gave him a shot. He slowly drifted away as I hugged him and cried my eyes out. Then the vet and his assistant helped me wrap him up in his doggy blanket and they put them in their van and took him to the pet crematorium for me.

It was really hard to have him put to sleep but I was so glad that it was done at home and I know my dog was happy that his final place was there in a place he loved instead of the vets office.

I can only hope that some day I go out in a similar way surrounded by my favorite toys, food and loved ones outdoors on a sunny spring day.

Anyway, if your vet is unable to come to you I'd recommend calling around and finding one who will.

Sorry Wheels, he reeeeaaally didn't like the vets office. When he was 6months old one of my roommates at the time accidentally let him out. When he came home he wasn't using his back leg (the dog, not the roommate). Turns out his puppy knee was shattered. Car? kicked? Who knows. Just really f'd up. Took 4 screws and all the money I had to get him repaired (and fixed, I had the vet throw in a free neutering).

He couldn't walk for 2 mos, I had to carry him outside three times a day to poop and pee him and he was a Chow/Golden mix. He was getting bigger everyday. Rough time for a young dog.

    10 years later...

Anyway, he didn't like the vets office much.

I turned it off so I didn't have to watch the end. It really did suck.

We had to put one of our cats to sleep last year, and it was a real downer. It wasn't the first cat we've had die or put to sleep, but he was so good natured...

Like nate said in his first post, the vet told us he had stomach cancer. He was sick and had lost a lot of weight, and whatever they did to treat him made him a kitten again for a while. He was happy, played with toys, etc. But I knew we were basically told by the vet that we were going to watch him die over a short time - about 8 weeks - and that's what happened.

The upside to pets is all the years of joy and companionship they bring. The downside is they all die long before we do.

    Condolences, Nate4Prez.

Nate -- that is really rough. I love my dog and she is like 7 and I know some day I will have to put her down. Unfortunately, it's just part of having a dog. You get all the good times, but then when they are sick or aging, it is really tough. She was in Dove Lewis for 3 days like three years ago, and I felt absolutely sick about it. Denny says it well up above. Condolences Nate 4 Prez.

I know my family dog was put down recently, same problem with losing weight rapidly. I guess they gave him some chocolate though right before. =] You could probably do the same.
