So who is it. Mark Warkentein? He acted like a little child when he left Portland.

At first I wanted to dismiss this story, when I saw AW attached to the byline, but there's not just smoke, there'a already been fire -- and it looks like it might just go to full blown conflagration.

No shit. It's like the Patterson/Nash era never existed to some so-called fans here.

Well, I wonder if Allen thinks Nate would have more success if he had more defensive minded players, when KP has done pretty much nothing but draft/sign offensive minded guys ... I'm not saying I think Nate will actually have success if he gets a bunch of defensive minded guys, I'm just saying there seems to be something of a philosophical disconnect between management and coaching staff.

    Greg Oden?

    Nic Batum?

Jesus Fucking Christ. Ridiculous stuff in this thread. Pritchard should have drafted Durant over Oden. He's a much better defensive player.

The ratio is a little bit off you'll agree though, right?

While not the only reason I'm sure.. but Bayless with his Lateral Quickness, and "commitment to playing defense" as draft express put it. I would add him there.

2 of the last 4 #1 picks were defensive players. Oden, Batum, and Bayless was supposed to be a solid player on both ends of the court. I don't buy it.

Bayless has the quickness, but his lack of length really hurts his chances of being a great wing defender -- in any case there was nothing he did tangibly at U of A to suggest he was anything but a great scorer and mystery meat on the defensive end.

In any case, I wasn't trying to stir up a bunch of shit by saying KP hasn't drafted/signed many defensive minded players I'm just saying I think there might be a disconnect between KP's management style and Nate's coaching style.

Oden, yes, Batum for sure, but Bayless?

EDIT: I think you're missing the point and getting caught up in minutiae; it's not about just the draft, it's a general difference of philosophy I'm talking about.

I completely agree with this statement. The rest of this thread made such little sense intellectually that I think I needed to be hammered over the head with reasoning in order to understand a salient point. Thanks for clarifying your post.

I'll add that it frightens the hell out of me that Vulcan Inc. may value McMillan's value over Pritchard's value. If Nate had his way, we'd be watching a bunch of 85-74 'blowouts'.

I said 2 out of 4. I added Bayless because he was supposed to be a two-way player. If I was using Bayless as an example, I'd have said 3 out of 4.

I tend to agree ... he's got a little bit of Larry Brown in him that way.

But regardless, I think until these philosophical issues (that may or may not exist) get resolved and the front office starts adding players that fit the coach's system or they get a coach to fit their players, it's like buying a bunch of parts made for a sports a car and then trying to assemble them into a pickup truck -- you might be able to do it, but the result isn't going to be pretty.

I'd also add, Sergio, Claver, Koponen, Freeland (potential defensive player, but just a raw project currently), Rudy and then free agent signings of Miller and Blake, extending Webster ...

    Hello darkness, my old friend
You may be right that there's a difference in philosophy, but I'm not sure it's the one you mean. To me, Pritchard just wants the best talents he can find, regardless of the offense/defense distribution of said talent. That is, he's not willing to accept less talent in order to get more defense (or more offense).

McMillan seems to have a definite style in mind...low-risk, grind it out, defensive-minded. He might want particular types of players.

So, to me, if there's a philosophical disconnect between the two, it's not "offense versus defense" but "maximizing talent versus players who play the right way [as McMillan defines it]." I can't be certain that either man would articulate his views that way, but that is the impression I've gotten from what they say (for public consumption) and do.
