Romeo & Juliet is a shameless horrible film While there are no Jack Nicholson's, Al Pacino's or Robert DeNiro's of this generation there are many good actors out there still today. A few to name. Sean Penn Daniel Day-Lewis Philip Seymour Hoffman Edward Norton Gary Oldman Forest Whitaker Daniel Day-Lewis is especially good. Maybe the best actor I've ever seen.
If he's the best actor you have ever seen, possibly...then how is he not a Nicholson, Pacino, or De Niro? Are you talking in terms of popularity? And you left Denzel off you're list :]
Wow Raging Bull only an 8? That's ridiculous. Raging Bull is definitely Scorcese's best film and is one of the greatest character studies EVER done on film. Robert DeNiro's finest work as an actor. Taxi Driver is close and I can see why some people like it more, because it gives you some closure unlike Raging Bull. But if not for one of the greatest performances ever put on screen I would put Taxi Driver above Raging Bull. I find it hard to take you seriously now though since you think Casino is a better film than Raging Bull.
I meant of this generation. I was trying to refer to his comment about actors in Leo's age range. I think Denzel is overrated because he tends to play one of two character archetypes, and neither one has a great amount of depth. I hate to say this, but I think a lot of people overrate him because he is black. There are several black actors who have given better individual performances than he ever has. Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland & Ghost Dog, Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda, etc. Has anyone here seen The Wire? I'd even argue that Andre Royo and Michael K. Williams have more raw talent than Denzel.
So can many of the actors I said. Hell Will Smith carries a lot of films doesn't mean all the films he's making are good. Films of Denzel's that are average or just plain terrible. - The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - Deja Vu - The Manchurian Candidate - The Preacher's Wife - Virtuosity - Ricochet - Mississippi Masala - Heart Condition - For Queen and Country - Power - Carbon Copy The Book of Eli looks horrible, too. Devil in a Blue Dress is greatly underrated, though.
He was good in Deja Vu...it was just an average movie. At least, IMO. Same with Book of Eli. And Will Smith... Bad Boys III in about two years :] That'll look great on blu ray!
Brokeback Mountain - I've been wanting to watch this for a long time and holy shit. I was blown away. The performances were amazing, Heath Ledger especially. Ennis was one of the best characters i've ever seen. The subtle things in the film were key (ie the shirts) and i plan on watching it again to pick up on more. Much better than Crash imo. Btw to the guy who was listing best actors, i think Ledger and Dicaprio should be included. Most ppl disagree with dicaprio but he has giving too many great performances (what's eating gilbert grape, the basketball diaries) to be constantly underrated by ppl who still see him as a 'teen heartthrob' type
I think that Dicaprio has turned into a swell actor, and he usually plays in movies that are particularly good. I do not believe he is better than anyone on that list of people I named, and I think he has yet to find that career defining role, such as DeNiro did in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull or Day-Lewis did in There will be Blood and My Left Foot.
There's no universal rating system with movies. Jesus Christ, you sound like those elitist NYU film students. Just cause you say one is better, it doesn't mean it is. Chill out. That's what the forum is for. Relax Roger Ebert. And I do believe Casino was a better film. To me, Raging Bull was a great film, probably the best work De Niro has done, nothing was forced, he really became Jake LaMotta, (and not the other way around), but I just never cared for the story, I was never drawn in, and quite frankly, I felt like the movie was rather empty. I'd take Taxi Driver over Raging Bull any day of the week. Even Casino. I miss Joe Pesci.
And to me, Ledger is overrated. Love Leo though, he's really grown as an actor. And Romeo & Juliet was a decent movie, not great, but decent. Not "shameless" like you say.
Yeah, because people who know more than you are "elitist NYU film students". Taxi Driver over Raging Bull is debatable, but Casino who borrows so much from better films than it, I don't think so. I love however, how you criticize me for saying Raging Bull is better than TD and Casino, and tell me there's no universal rating on movies, then go on to say WHY Casino is a better film. And I just find it hypocritical that you tell someone else that movies they think are 10's are not and then when someone does it to yourself you call them elitists.
lol now you just sound bitter. And it's as if you don't seem to grasp a certain concept. I said there's no universal truth as to which movie is better. IMO (In my opinion), so-and-so was better. This movie is a __ while this is a __. C'mon, now you're just nitpicking at a criterion set by myself just because you got your precious movie critic feelings hurt. Relax, guy. And I gave the reasoning due to the fact that I needed to explain why I THOUGHT it was better. Really dude, now you're just arguing on the basis of semantics. "You said this, but you said this," so on and so forth.
In accordance to what? I just didn't believe what he did. That's all there was to it. I didn't base it as a fact-totem. You REALLY need to lighten up, take a midol . And as for R&J, it was a decent film; however, your lack of understanding towards another individual and their sentiments are pretty amusing, so its moot. I guess i liked it and you didn't. No big deal. Look, there's no point in arguing this. This dick-measuring contest you're trying to put out is really old, and quite frankly it's a waste of both our times. Let's just agree to disagree.
Meh and oh, I meant i thought the directing was, the acting was amazing in this one though. In terms of direction, I thought Scorsese did a much better job on TD than Bull. If I thought the WHOLE film was empty, I wouldn't have rated it an 8/8.5 lol.
Relax, I'm relaxed dude. I grasp what you're saying but it's not true. There are movies that are definitely better than others. For example Shawshank Redemption is definitely better than movies like Shark Attack 3 or Transformers 2. Usually people try to listen to experts that have studied film and have a lot of knowledge on cinema. I'm in the movie industry, but it's probably better if I don't elaborate. I watch, on average, 200-300 films a year... which isn't nearly as crazy as it sounds. Anyways, it's safe to say I know what I'm talking about. I don't tell a mechanic of twenty years that I know more than he does and he doesn't know what he's doing. What I'm getting at is, not all opinions are created equal. That's not to say you can't have one but I definitely know what I'm talking when it comes to movies more than you do. Movies aren't really objective to begin with, they're either good or they're not. It's comes down to opinion if two good movies are really better than each other. In which case I usually listen to the people that know more than me. [EDIT: I wasn't trying to fellate myself]
