Be sure this Texas Rangers' package is marked 'fragile'

Three days ago, the Texas Rangers were poised on the lip of first place and, having performed my customary exhaustive research, I was prepared to make the case in print that the Rangers were about to take off and play the best baseball in the American League.

Never mind.

Manager Ron Washington's team is in the throes of a three-game losing streak. First place in the AL West is no longer within arm's reach. The crisp play that marked the season's first eight games has given way to sloppy execution.

The New York Yankees, admittedly, will do that to a team. There's a certain shock and awe that every young team will exhibit when visiting the stadium in the Bronx.

But though the New York dailies were full of stories trumpeting Yankees' "dominance" Saturday and hailing steroids user Alex Rodriguez for his 584th home run, the point legitimately could be raised that the Rangers were supposed to be beyond all this.
