In 1979, the Oilers drafted Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson with the first three picks in franchise history.

A year later, they took Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri and Andy Moog. A year after that, Grant Fuhr.

Three drafts produced five Hall-of-Famers to surround Wayne Gretzky, and with that the Oilers were an instant Stanley Cup contender.

It could be argued that the 2010 National Hockey League entry draft -- set for June 25 and 26 in Los Angeles -- is as important as any of the first three to an Oilers' organization that has never before made the first selection.

"It's a statement from the Edmonton Oilers. We get to choose who we think is the No. 1 pick and will be the best Oiler," said General Manager Steve Tambellini. "I think it's incredibly important for the hockey club. It's wonderful for the City of Edmonton to be able to think about getting the first pick in the NHL draft. I think it's great on a lot of different levels, from an enthusiasm and excitement standpoint."
