I doubt Travis will be available for cheap. Howard probably would.

Not sold on the idea of bringing Travis back. More and more, this year is showing the value of high IQ guys, IMO.

I'm not the world's biggest Outlaw fan, but he's well-liked and a good source of instant offense. And he won't play a minute of competitive basketball (in theory) without Oden or Camby there to erase his mistakes.

So yeah, I could see going after him instead of Howard.

No need to resign either, Dante is more than solid for a 4th big.

    Just a thought.

    Camby-Oden-Aldridge == Sabonis-Grant-Sheed???

Great news on Camby. I got a funny feeling that Paul Allen will be paying $25 mil for only about 100 games of actual uninjured basketball play, but if he wants to spend $250k/game for Camby's services, who am I to stop him?

I like the Camby acquisition and really appreciate what he brings, but I think this was a bad move.

Why? Because it was an extension, and extensions on veterans are almost always a bad idea.

What NBA team would offer him more than the MLE this summer? Does anyone really think that he's going to get a $10m/year offer from any NBA team, even with the salary cap higher than expected?

There will only be a few teams under the cap more than the MLE, and presumably they will have bigger fish to fry than signing a 36 year-old Marcus Camby.

If we had traded for Miller last year and he did well, would it have been wise to lock him up with a big extension?

As the core starters, absolutely. Outlaw would be nice to bring off the bench as a scorer. Not someone the team relies upon. He was miscast, for years, as a developing member of the core. I think that's caused people to underrate him. He's not a reliable foundation piece, but he is a nice luxury off the bench.

A lot, I suppose, depends on how the Blazers evaluate Bayless and Rudy. I believe Bayless has more potential and would like to see the Blazers move more toward having Bayless backup both guard spots...have him on the floor with either Roy or Miller. If Rudy could be dealt, perhaps as part of some kind of package (like with JPEC), that would work for me. Then Webster could be a backup swing 2/3 and Outlaw a backup swing 3/4. It would be depth without a lot of uncertainty over roles, IMO.

Look, we know everyone wants themselves some Diener, but I still think we'll be able to re-sign him at a reasonable rate.

Camby starts the season then moves to the bench to back up both GO and LMA. The beauty of Camby is that he can play with either GO or Aldridge. It's a completely interchangable rotation.

If Howard wants to keep playing, I don't see a reason to keep him in Portland. If he's leaning toward retirement, I'd see if he's interested in coaching here.

I think Camby would have gotten a 10+ million FA offer. There is a ton of teams with a lot of cap space and when Lebron signs back with Clev teams need to make some type of FA pickup. IMO this is a great signing. I thought it would take a 3 year contract but if the Blazers only have to offer a 2 year contract no matter what the amount it is a steal. Camby, Oden and LMA are a great 3 player rotation.

Re: Marc Stein: Blazers in talks with Camby about extension now!!!

I'd say the years are more important than the dollar amount, honestly. In an offseason with plenty of teams with a lot of cap space, I think it's worth a little extra to not have to negotiate against anyone but yourself.

He likely wouldn't have gotten 10 a year, but I think it's very reasonable for a team like OKC or NY to offer him more than the MLE. So going above that to not have to bid against them is worth it. It also gives the front office an easier opportunity to plan for the offseason, knowing that one obstacle is out of the way. I prefer that than coming up with scenarios starting with IF we sign Camby.

Absolutely! That's why I was reminded of our front line from ten years ago.

Re: Marc Stein: Blazers in talks with Camby about extension now!!!

It depends on whether there's an opportunity cost. If Allen is willing to "spend what it takes," then there's no opportunity cost...that money can't be used for anything else, because the team is over the cap.

Two years probably overlaps reasonably well with both Camby's remaining shelf life and with Miller's tenure with this team. I think it locks in a championship-caliber core, for two seasons, of Miller, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, Oden and Camby. After two seasons, Camby and Miller expire as contracts and the team can try to reload again.

I think that thinking in terms of pure cost efficiency is a mistake when a team is close to title contention. Once you're a winning team, every marginal win is slightly less efficient than the one before it. I don't think it's possible to maximize both wins and cost efficiency. If Allen is on baord with spending, I'd rather maximize wins. The Yankees aren't the most efficient team in terms of dollars per marginal win...they're just one of the most successful teams, recently, in terms of wins.
