The next challenger to Georges St. Pierre's UFC Welterweight Title is expected to be the fighter that emerges victorious at UFC 113's co-main event, Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley. UFC 113 takes place May 8th in Montreal where hometown favourite St. Pierre will be in attendance--and where the announcement that St. Pierre will coach against the winner of the bout prior to their title engagement on the 12th season of The Ultimate Fighter is anticipated.

The show is set to begin filming this summer with a SpikeTV debut in September. The 12th season of the venerable reality series will focus on lightweight and light-heavyweight fighters vying for UFC contracts. Filming the show would delay St. Pierre's fifth consecutive title defense for approximately six months from his last bout in late March. St. Pierre, Koscheck, and Daley have not coached on The Ultimate Fighter before, though St. Pierre was a guest trainer in season four (The Comeback).

St. Pierre has faced Koscheck once before at UFC 74, earning a unanimous decision victory over the former collegiate wrestler. It was St. Pierre's first fight after his shock upset loss to Matt Serra in April of 2007. Koscheck is a product of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter. Competing as a middleweight, Koscheck fought his way into the semi-finals but was defeated by Diego Sanchez in a controversial split-decision. Sanchez would go on to win the season and the UFC contract. Koscheck had his revenge at UFC 69 defeating Sanchez by unanimous decision in one of the worst fights in UFC history. Koscheck has been a prolific UFC fighter since TUF 1 competing in the Octagon 16 times amassing a 12-4 record. Losses to St. Pierre, Thiago Alves, and Paulo Thiago have kept him out of the title picture thus far.

St. Pierre has never fought UFC newcomer Daley who debuted at UFC 103 in September. Daley is a training partner of Dan Hardy, the last man to face (and be defeated by) St. Pierre, at Team Rough House in Nottingham, England. Daley is riding a four-fight knockout streak. He is a former Cage Rage and FX3 welterweight champion with over 30 professional bouts experience. In his last fight at UFC 108 Daley failed to make weight, citing illness as an excuse. Daley's last title fight was for the now-defunct EliteXC promotion in 2008. Daley lost to then-champion Jake Shields by armbar submission in the second round however he demonstrated impressive take-down and submission defence up until that point in the bout.

The Ultimate Fighter 11 airs Wednesdays at 10:00PM EST on SpikeTV and in HD at 12:00AM EST on Rogers Sportsnet.

As someone who wants to see GSP fight 3-4 times a year I don't take the decision to put him on TUF well... but I understand it.

The WW division is scrambled right now. The decision to make the winner of Daley/Koscheck the top contender is a bit arbitrary. Clearly the top contender is Jon Fitch, especially if he beats Thiago Alves. Since GSP has beaten everybody so decisively it is tough to get fans amped up for a rematch. Koscheck is a bit of an exception since he lost to GSP in a non-title fight.

The UFC might be signing Jake Shields soon but an instant title shot doesn't seem likely. They will probably put him against one of the top fighters out of the gate and then let him fight for the title if he wins--like they did with Anderson Silva.

By having GSP sidelined for an extra 2-3 months they get another round of title eliminator fights in. However if upsets happen (Daley over Koscheck, Alves over Fitch, etc) then the division is more of a mess than it was before.

I don't see why Shields would want to drop back down to WW. He spent a lot of time bulking up properly to get to 185.

Maybe GSP can meet him up @ 185. I'm honestly sick of GSP @ 170, it is just tarnishing his career more than helping it now, IMO.

Re: TUF 12: St. Pierre vs. Koscheck/Daley? [update: Jake Shields also being considere

Steve Cofield comments - "[Jake] Shield (sic) could be free in June with taping for TUF 12 set to begin around the same time. Shields would be a great get for the UFC and a natural to become one of the TUF 12 coaches with the winner of a fight against either Daley and Koscheck getting a shot at GSP in early 2011. It would also allow the UFC to build Shields' name with those unfamiliar with anything non-UFC and keep St. Pierre active."

According to Dana the twelfth season begins filming in five weeks. Because Jake is under contract with Strikeforce for another 1.5-2 months it precludes his involvement, presumably.
