Ducks might see Duke

Oregon’s new basketball coach is likely to have a very challenging game early in his first season with a matchup against Duke, this season’s national champion.

Sources close to both programs acknowledged that the game is close to being finalized, though Oregon not having a coach or a permanent director of athletics has complicated the negotiations.

The game would be played at the Rose Garden in Portland, and the tentative date is Nov. 27, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That wouldn’t conflict with football because Oregon’s game for that weekend against Arizona at Autzen Stadium is scheduled for Friday.

Duke’s primary motivation for playing the game is to bring Kyle Singler to his home region for a game. That’s the usual promise made during recruiting to prospective Duke players, and Singler, a senior next season, has never played in Oregon as a Blue Devil. Singler announced earlier this week that he would return for his senior season rather than declare for the NBA draft, though he was expected to be a first-round selection.

The game also will provide a matchup of the Singler brothers, with E.J. about to become a sophomore for the Ducks. Duke and Oregon have never played in men’s basketball.

The last time Duke played in Oregon, it was to allow Mike Dunleavy, a Jesuit High School graduate, a similar opportunity. On that occasion, the Blue Devils posted 97-64 win over the University of Portland at the Rose Garden on Dec. 19, 2000. The attendance of 15,341 was listed as the largest ever for a college basketball game in the state.

That attendance was exceeded two years later when 20,762 turned out to watch Oregon, then ranked seventh in the country, defeat 14th-ranked Kansas on Dec. 7, 2002, in a rematch of the Midwest Regional final from the previous season.

Oregon’s schedule for next season is still being worked on, but the Ducks will have a game in Eugene against Missouri, which has played in the past two NCAA Tournaments. That is part of the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series and a return game for Oregon’s going to Missouri last season, where the Tigers beat the Ducks, 106-79.

A Pac-10 spokesman said Thursday that almost all of the games between the two conferences are being scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 2 through 5, and every effort would be made to avoid conflicts with football games. Oregon is scheduled to play at Oregon State on Dec. 4.
