On a day when Marlon Byrd made a behind-the-back, no-look catch, when Ryan Dempster scattered four hits over eight innings and when Carlos Zambrano laid low in the bullpen, it was up to Lou Piniella to provide some postgame fireworks.

All the ingredients were there for a vintage Piniella blowup Wednesday after a 3-2 loss to the Nationals in which the Cubs stranded 11 base-runners and wasted another quality start.

The only thing needed was a spark to set Piniella off, and that came three questions into his postgame news conference when he was asked about his strategy after Byrd doubled leading off against reliever Brian Bruney in the eighth inning of a one-run game.
