The Mayor is returning to Ames.

Former Iowa State star Fred Hoiberg, nicknamed the Mayor in his college days, has accepted the Cyclones job to replace Greg McDermott.

The news was first reported by ABC-5 in Iowa.

Sources have told FOXSports.com that an official announcement is expected on Wednesday.

Hoiberg, 37, is from Nebraska and played four years in Ames – three for Johnny Orr and one for Tim Floyd.

    Good for Fred!

Good guy! Liked him as a NBA player. Wish him luck.

Wow... is he that old??? It's hard to believe it's been that long since he played for the Cyclones. Hopefully he can get the program turned around.
